Ok. yes i know usually major iphone os updates are in the summer and are released alongside new hardware. But this time. Apple is in a very different situation if you ask me. Competition is on the rise and we havent seen any revisions to 3.1 in months. Which is very uncharacteristic of Apple as we all know. Do you think 4.0 will be released next week? Obviously They have been working on 4.0 for months. The way i figure it. Do they really need to do any betas? What do you guys think?

I highly doubt 4.0 is comming out any time soon.
Most likelly with the new iphone.
I heard the reason they didnt release any new firmware was because theres mention of the new iphone and new tablet in the software along with hardware that might be used on those devices so they decided to push back the releases till after the announcement.
Maybe beta releases for the developers so they can work on updating their programs compatibility.

i've heard that rumor also but why would developers need to update their programs? it seems like 4.0 isn't an under the hood changing operating system. It seems like their not really giving developers any new API's to use or anything like. it seems to be more of a change on the user end. Therefore, i dont think developers will have to much to update their programs. Well of course they will need some updates for it to run on the tablet but not on the iphone.

Doubtful that it will be on the 27th...maybe we'll hear something official then.

Most firmware updates need updates and tweaks on appstore programs also.
If programs need changes from 3.0 to 3.1.2 to run better or more stable most likelly they will need to be updated for 4.0 too

Considering how bad the first few releases of 2.0 were, and how bad the first few betas of 3.0 were, I see no reason why they'd just release a major update without months of testing.

The poll won't get accurate results. The beta OS can be released at next week's event AND be officially released in the Summer (like last year).

The beta will be released on the 27th to developers and the final version will be released along side the new iPhone this summer.

If the tablet is being unveiled/released at the event on the 27th, then it is not running 4.0. I think we'll see another 3.x release (the one the tablet runs on) before we see 4.0.

And? A new version of 3.x can do that, or even a tablet specific version. I'm sure you know that 3.x is different for the iPod Touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS.

I don't see them adding any large update like multitasking to a 3.x update. However, I do see them modifying the current OS for the Tablet or designing an entirely new one based off of the iPhone OS.

I wouldn't call it a large update. If a jailbreak and Backgrounder can do it on an iPhone, Apple can certainly have a team easily add it to the tablet version of the OS.

Commercially and technically it's a big update. Apple aren't going to implement multitasking like Backgrounder does above the hood or, especially, under it.

I agree.
Usually from 3.x going to 4.0 is a big upgrade.
Its not like 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 type of minor update.

I think Apple will release the tablet with an updated version of the OS, 3.2 perhaps, that will allow multitasking. Maybe another version will be released across all devices (minus multitasking) before 4.0, maybe not.

All I do know, is that if the tablet is unveiled at, and released shortly after the media event, it will not be running any version of the 4.0 software.

Yeah, that's the reason why the poll won't give accurate results.:D

I think Apple will show off 4.0, but they won't release it until the next iPhone release.

The Tablet will most likelly have its own operating system seperate from the iphone OS version but obviously similar.
That would be my guess, with the Appstore and many similar features as the iphone and probably more capabilities.

I think it will be in direct relation to the iPhone OS, even sharing the same OS version numbers. Although, I do think the tablet OS will have more frequent update than the iPhone OS.

Really, you know?

If a tablet is announced and it runs the iPhone OS, it will run version 4.0. Version 3.X hasn't be updated in months - clearly they've been working on big things.

If it runs a version of the iPhone OS, and is released before June/July, I don't believe it will run 4.0.
You don know that 3.x hasn't been updated, there have just been no updates released outside of Apple. This could be because it apparently has things in it regarding a tablet, as has been said elsewhere on this site.

I still believe there will be an intermediate release between now and 4.0. It could be they're working hard on releasing a beta that actually works, unlike their last "big" 3.x update, 3.1.

Of course, if it's only related to the iPhone OS (iTablet OS) and not actually a direct version of it, then it could very well be 1.0, which would make all the speculation and arguments here irrelevant.
