I just got PowerMac G4 Digital Audio 466Mhz for free and was wondering what OS to put on it, Panther or Tiger?

It has 256Mb currently and two 4Gb hard drives (not 40) but I hope to change the hard drive issue soon.

If I upgrade the ram, which I might not because I don't want to spend money on it. Would it be worth it to go for a 768Mb or would 512 be fine?

Thanks.

Either OS would really run fine. If you have other computers already running Tiger, it may be nice to have one on Panther, just for compatibility sake.

256MB is a bit small for Panther, and minimum for Tiger. 512MB would be fine for either, at 768MB, you couldn't really feel a big difference but OS X does love RAM.

Those hard drives at 4GB seem like a bit small. Drop in a bigger HD, then you could turn those two 4GB into a RAID array with Disk Utility for added performance/reliability.

I have a 40Gb hard drive in an external case that I will put in it as soon as I get a big drive to replace it. It is used for backups at the moment.

The most stenuous thing it would ever do would be iPhoto if I get my parents on it. So 512 probably would be fine, although I love ram so it may be hard for me to stay with that little, although I don't realy have the money to do much more.

Thanks for the advice though.
