OS Not Fully Loading, Freezes on Desktop

I restarted my computer after experiencing some slowing while using FCP. After I restarted, when the desktop loaded again, it only loaded the spotlight bar in the top right corner, and nothing else. The pin wheel comes up when spot light is moused over. I tried doing a safeboot several times, the computer starts up fine then, but then the problem continues when returning to a normal start up. I also tried upgrading to 10.4.7 while in safeboot but it still continues. Any Ideas would be Awesome, Thanks!

Boot from Install DVD and do basic maintenance with Disk Utility (permissions, and hard drive scan). Hopefully a few things will be corrected by this maintenance and then you'll boot up fine.

What kind of machine?

its a 4 x 2.5 GHz G5 thanks I'll try that and see how it works....
