Hey All,

I am currently running Sierra on this. Can I safely upgrade to a new OS or should I stay here?

Not with this GPU, it’s a GPU of a the least expensive early-2008 Mac Pro. High Sierra is the last supported release for it and works pretty badly.

Get a METAL supported GPU and upgrade to Mojave. See the stickie threads for more info.

Thats a pretty good chunk of cash to be putting in a 10 year old machine. Guess I'll just leave it as is....or sell it....or.....

My choice was to spend some money now and wait until the Apple Silicon migration is done. For me, 1st generation products should be avoided and an upgraded Mac Pro like yours will work fine for two years more with Catalina+OpenCore or one more year fully supported with Mojave Security Upgrades.

There are GPU models more palatable for the wallet, like some GT 710 or GT 640.

In the grand scheme, no it’s not.
You have a 2-3k(original cost) mac there, adding a metal gpu will give you many years of use, even staying on Mojave.

You know, I think he paid a whole lot more than $3k for this, if I remember right. Anyways, mainboard has been hot and cold for a lot of years. Those bits and pieces dont last forever, which is why I am hesitant to throw money at it.

I did upgrade the HD's, originally there were 4-2TB spinners in it.

The Radeon 2600 XT in your Mac Pro isn’t durable. When I had the 2008 Mac Pro, I had two 2600XTs that conked out. If you plan to stay in Sierra, maybe a Radeon 5770 or 5870 are good replacements that are not too expensive.
