OS User ownership problems

Ok currently I'm using Windows 2KPro. Hey don't take off as this might interest you Jaguar or Panther users - god I envy you so much at this moment!!!

Here goes. I just logged into my administrator account on my PC and found that any site info (cookies & site history) was duplicated in my wife's cookies folder. All files showed the same info/date accessed, and allowed her to access them under her login. I'm almost 120% sure that no application installed on my machine has caused this - except for a possible SPYware app.

Well since I'm by the PC I went surfing, as the administrator and as my usual user login. Then I logged in as the admin again to check all user's cookies and history folders for Internet Explorer. To my surprise - and utter shock - all site history and cookies are in EACH user's cookies folder's????????! What gives?? I went to the internet café and tried this as well since a friend of mine uses WinXP Pro on his personal machine there. Same thing??

I though that each users files and web history and cookies belonged to themselves?! Does this occur in Jaguar or Panther with respect to Internet Explorer or Safari??!

Please help as this has caused a huge argument between my wife and I. And if I'm wrong I need to make it up to her.

Get Ad-aware 6 (search on download.com) and run it to see if there is any SpyWare doing this, I don't think it's normal.

By "couche", I assume you mean "couch" and not "coochie", right?

i don't think this is normal behaviour either, but i promise you Jag would never do such a stupid thing it can't, it's restricted by it's own security...

i'm pretty sure they found another four vulnerabilities in Windows today, you could always just say you were attacked by a virus that messed things up... would be a good way to explain any ... unique sites that she knows she didn't visit

are you sure you have the cache set to your user account and not all users, or to a public folder?

i.e.

c:/documents and settings/jugga/cookies
c:/documents and settings/jugga/local settings/temporary internet files

not

c:/documents and settings/all users/cookies
or
c:/program files/internet explorer/temporary internet files


Sounds like user error to me actually.

Well this response is another reason for me to switch to Mac.
Thank you all for your quick humorous yet helpful responses.

First off I did check the cache, for all user's and everything is as it should be - belonging to each user's own local settings folders.

Next off Yes I indeed mean couch, my wife is still warm, lol!

Um yeah I did give Ad Aware a try and low and behold thats what the problem was!!!! SOme spyware installed itself while I was browsing and change settings of my user's home folder, cookies & temporary internet files folders to all users to access and execute and delete - pretty much anything - to all my files & folders within my home. Then it copied all site history and cookies to all other users' cookies folders. God this truely pissed me off.

I really gotta remember to think differently, as I leave myself open to jokes, ftaok that was a good one.

Apology was made, dinner, desert, and breakfast was made in supreme style and taste, and wife has forgiven me. I'll think twice about ever thinking its her, but I'll never again doubt the insecurity of windows as it truly BLOWS!

Glad to here that Jaguar this isnt an incident.

9months 28 days to owning a Mac or sooner.
