What is scary about it?

It's a beta of the first update to 10.10. Install it.

It's talking about partitions and make sure you have a back up, which I do. But why are they calling it a "Seed". Sorry I'm just really worried about it.

OS X 10.10.1 has been released to developers and beta testers. It is still under testing, so it comes with the usual warning for test builds. It may have unrecognized problems which can cause big problems with your machine. It is recommended that you test on your non-primary machine so that you don't impact your daily use. Testers should be prepared to restore to a backup if necessary.

Those general caveats aside, this specific build is a bug-fix release to address issues people have in 10.10, and the notes ask testers to focus on WiFi and Notification Center. The build has been out for several days now, and there have been no widespread reports of problems, so it is unlikely to seriously impact your use of your computer. You can follow the threads here to keep an eye on potential problems, since there seem to be a lot of people running the build.

FWIW, I haven't had any problem with it, and I think it may have improved the wifi problems I was seeing.

Anyone else have weird restart issues during install. Almost thought it was bricked......

it installed fine for me, but the WIFI still drops out on 5GHZ. Another bug report filed with Apple.

you have the new ac extreme unit? Trying to decide if its worth it as the new ios devices allegedly are a ton faster with it (laptops only have n). Internet is 120/12 down/up

I knew better and still stupidly installed it. It's broken CrashPlan, Microsoft Office 2011 (all apps), Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac, and Firefox crashes a bit too.

Don't bother with it. My $0.02.

EDIT: Oh, and forgot to mention, messed up graphics quite a bit too. Clicking on stacks in the dock results in crazy messed up and slow animation making it near unusable.

EDIT 2: And I just realized last night that NO videos will play. Nothing on YouTube, other websites, nothing in VLC (will play audio only), nothing in QuickTime Player, etc.

My mac forced it into me when it was sleeping even though this has never happened before. Broke safari.

LOL, same here. It was already updated when I got to my iMac. Luckily, my Safari seems ok. However, it appears my dock has lost it's transparency and is now just a solid white/gray dock.

BTW, if your not sure why you are seeing it, it's probably because you signed up for the public beta of Yosemite. You can turn off pre-release software updates which is what I did after upgrading to Yosemite final.

To turn off these beta notifications, go to System Preferences, then click the App Store icon. In the section that says Your computer is set to received pre-release Software Update seeds, click Change. Click Do Not Show Pre-Release Updates. You will no longer receive these notifications.

Once you turn it off, you WILL NOT have the option to re-enable it from there.

I signed up for the public beta of Yosemite and I have not been offered the 10.10.1 update.
Any idea why.??
I ran all the betas then installed the full release when it came out.

You must have automatic updates switched on, or it would not of installed. You signed up for the OS X Beta program, so it will offer you the latest beta releases.

Useless update, fixes absolutely nothing for me...

-stacks animation still lags
-large PDF files still impossible to view in Preview.

Fixing things is much more difficult than breaking them.
In software development the breaking is even easier.

We might even have to wait for 10.11 or 10.12 for a stable release.

AppleSeed; seeding of Apple software

… why are they calling it a "Seed" …

A good question. The word 'seed' is missing from
https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/faq … present at
https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/legal but the latter is not immediately user-friendly.

If you sign out from that page then visit
https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/help/faq (Help – AppleSeed)
you'll find more casual uses of phrases such as 'product seed', 'customer seed' and 'software seeding projects'.

If you like, think of Apple sowing the seeds of future products to customers; you, the customer, can help Apple to grow the products. With your feedback (typically through Feedback Assistant), Apple may make fixes and enhancements that are likely to please you, and people like you.

Hmmm.. I've changed my mind about this update. Seems to be more stable than I thought. My RAM usage is much improved, and it's running at Mavericks speeds today. So far so good.

I was contemplating downgrading back to Mavericks, but I really didn't want to lose the SMS Relay feature, so i'm glad it seems to be smooth at the moment.

This is disappointing, I'm not sure what the heck they did with Preview to make it such a dog in Yosemite but there you go.

I filed bug reports against these issues and I know Apple is aware of them as there's a RADAR open, but for pete's sake how did they decide Preview was releasable in this state? I was hoping for a quick fix now I'm concerned.

Solved the problem, re-installed Beta 5, then checked for updates, then after updating to beta 6, I got the 10.10.1 update. :)

none of these issues here.
