So I have a blue and white powermac g3 tower that has OS 8.6 on it and I want to upgrade it to OS X. However it needs a firmware update. This was fine, I dl'd the firmware update but the stupid firmware update utility then said I needed to upgrade to OS 9.1 to install it!? How do I do that? Oh well,,,I can BUY os 9.... This seems a bit too ridiculous, for apple to charge their users for products they don't need to upgrade to newer ones. Is there a firmware update utility you can boot from and install the firmware without booting an OS, like what if it had a blank hard drive? I can't seem to find such a utility on Apple's website.

Why not just find OS 9 on a torrent site, install it, and then run the firmware update before installing OS X? I mean, yeah, technically, it's illegal, but you're not going to be using it day in and day out -- it's only acting as a "bridge" from 8.6 to OS X.

If I recall correctly (and there's a good possibility that I don't), you'll need to have OS 9 on the computer in order to install OS X in the first place. I seem to remember having to upgrade my Mom's WallStreet PB to OS 9 before I could get Jaguar on there. Maybe it was for this very reason.

Mac OS 9 is needed for Mac OS X to install.
You can find it cheap on eBay though.

You absolutely cannot talk about illegally obtaining anything on these forums.

I don't know where you guys are getting this, but OS 9 IS NOT needed to install OS X on it. As long as the firmware is up to date you can install OS X on a blank hard drive in it even if it is the only hard drive.

8.6 will even work as the classic environment, at least for some of the earlier versions of OS X.
