OS X Crashing

Suprising as it seems, after adding 2 OWC 512mb ram modules I've had three instances of OS X crashing. First one was a kernel panic where I got a "please turn off your computer" while moving around about 30gigs worth of data, a second happened after I tried to wake my computer from sleep, only to find that I had to do a cold start, and I got a message box reporting that OS X had crashed again. Today, while playing Diablo II I had a full on OS X crash, followed by a Diablo II app crash after I rebooted and started playing again.

I'm worried that the OWC Memory is the culprit, because it is the only component I have changed, and all of this behaivor has occurred after installing the new ram.

Sound logical?

I hate to think that my ram is the culprit, because it's going to be a pain having to wait for a replacement.

If I get another kernel panic or OS X crash in the next 48 hours, that's it, ram is going back.

From what you are describing, the problem is 95% likely to be your RAM.

If you want to prove to yourself that the RAM is bad (or good) try running memtest on your machine. It can be sort of scary to run it, as you have to run in single-user mode, but if you follow the instructions it's not a big deal.

Ah, that sounds like a good idea. As long as memtest does not play around with my data on the hard disk, I'll give it a try.

Downloaded Rembr and Memtest, running Rembr (GUI wrapper for Memtest) because I'm feeling lazy.

EDIT: okay, it's got to be the ram. full on OS X crash while running rembr.

OK, it's definetly the RAM. (sighs) I'm not too happy, I don't like sending back stuff, but thank god I kept my old modules.

Yep, sorry to say it, but you are correct when you say your RAM is to blame for your problems SC68Cal.

Ok, now here's the strange part. I took out the ram modules last night and blew on them like the old NES cartridge trick, figuring that I've got nothing to lose taking the modules out and then reseating them.

Ran the Rember test and it passed.

I'm going to keep an eye on it. Run Rember a few more times just to see if I can get it to go on the fritz again.

I also got a tech support reply from OWC suggesting the same thing, or alternatively using some rubbing alcohol to clean the pins on the ram. So, going to give it a few more shots, I really don't feel like sending it back unless I absolutely have to. (Because I'm lazy)
