Hi all, I'm a designer using illustrator heavily -and everything has seized up on me since updating to el capitan a few days ago.
Bridge cc has stopped functioning almost entirely, illustrator cc takes 10 minutes to save a tiny file, etc...

I rooted out the possible issue to a huge slew of foreign language fonts that were somehow added to both the system library and the user font library during the update.

attempts to disable or delete some of these fonts using Font Book worked, but a lot of them are not allowed to disable or trash because it says either OS X needs them or they are "in use".

I can't do a wholesale cleaning of all my fonts because i have a zillion of them that i need and use and re-installing them would be a nightmare.
anyone else with this issue? any "easy" fix here?

It seems they are primarily hindu language fonts that are stubbornly refusing to be disabled, with a whole bunch of chinese/japanese that were disable-able.

Check out this excellent article. http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html#requiredfonts
There are many fonts you can delete, even if Apple's font book won't disable them.
However, if you are using any other language - I use Japanese - there are some fonts that cannot be deleted, and they are not listed in that article. Most of those "don't delete" fonts are involved with the systems display of the fonts, for example, without Arial Hebrew, the display of filenames in Japanese is broken in the finder. So be especially careful when deleting fonts from the System/Library/Fonts location. The Library/Fonts are easier.

wow, that is a very thorough article- thanks! The weird thing is, that even though there is a bunch of "minimum system fonts" - that should not be removed, the bulk of them were just regular library fonts. why did so many new foreign language fonts install and be active by default? I chose "english" as my language, you would think that the 50 or so other fonts in other languages would not be installed or at least install deactivated. it seems bizarre.
