OS X El Capitan what will I lose if I upgrade

OK before I upgrade I want to know what I will lose. Programs, files all the stuff that does not come preloaded on a new mac. The reason I ask this is because I have a version of Win Office on my Mac and don't want to lose that. As my nieces use this mac when they are over for school work. I have downloaded other programs which I can get free so that is nothing to worry about. I have also heard mixed reviews of El Capitan. So just want to find out if its worth upgrading for my use. I do take it with me on trips. So I use it for pics and videos. And I get on the net with it. But it just a basic laptop for me not to many programs and things like that. So just think of it a an everyday use laptop to surf net and see movies. I do use Iworks and always have it up to date. I have Flash player, Flip for mac, Perian, and Java installed. And of course VLC and some apps. But that is pretty much it. So But any specifics would be greatly appreciated.

That is a VERY broad question. It very much depends on what you use and what is important to YOU. I suggest you invest a little time looking at threads in this forum to see what problems have been encountered. Check out the "OS X El Capitan: Working & Not Working Apps" thread in this forum. Is there an urgency to update? I would also suggest you wait in 10.11.2 or 10.11.3 before upgrading so there is more time to fix bugs and for 3rd party vendors to get their software updated. Make sure you have a very good system backup before upgrading in case there are problems and you want to revert.

Office 2011 and Office 2016 work in El Capitan. Even Office 2008 still works but has some minor issues. Be sure you are running the latest versions. Office 2011 14.5.7, Office 2016 15.15.

I disagree with the above posters. I have been using El Cap as my main OS since the first PB. I had a few issues at the beginning of the Beta cycle, but none to speak of since the release of PB3. I am now running both the final 10.11 release and the 4th PB of 10.11.1 with no issues. I heavily use MS Office 2011 (currently at V14.5.7) and it works perfectly for me. I see no reason not to upgrade.

I would approach this upgrade from a different angle and ask a question: Is there a specific reason why you want to upgrade?

Assuming everything is currently working well I see no reason to rush. While 10.11.1 was just released it seems to mainly correct bugs in the installer and Mail, while I don't use Office but 2016 version was also mentioned in the release notes. If you upgrade immediately it is possible that you have no problems but given the number of bugs I recommend waiting until 10.11.2 or 10.11.3 are released.

If you decide to upgrade be sure to make at minimum one Time Machine backup. If you have important information I also recommend cloning your Mac to another drive with software such as Disk Utility, SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

El Capitan as other prior OS X upgrades can be done right on top of the existing OS. As stated by others, make SURE you have a proper and viable back up. I don't use time machine but I am a huge fan of cloning via Carbon Copy or the like and I make multiple ones prior to an upgrade.

Some folks have had issues with 10.11 with a failure after the upgrade and then during the first subsequent reboot. This has been traced to old kext files that are not compatible. If you have incompatible apps, then yes they will not work on the new version of the OS. Office however is working in the latest versions. Make sure you are on OS X 10.11.1 and on Office 2016 15.5 or Office 2011 14.5.7.

You do not need to re-install Office (or other apps) if you do an in place upgrade to the OS as long as the apps are compatible.

I'll second this, there were minor bugs back in aug and sept, but 10.11.1 has fixed everything for me. Also had some exchange issues with Outlook 2011 but it also fixed and Office 2011 is running perfectly no issues.

Mikzn when u upgraded did you have to reinstall Office. or was it still there when the install finished?

I upgraded today from 10.10.5 to 10.11.1 and have since and am currently downgrading back. I couldn't stand some of the quirks of the early build. Issues with iCloud Devices in System Preferences. The UI not rendering correctly in System Preferences. Some preference panels do not remember their screen position (iMessage, FaceTime, Availability panel in Calendar)... Finder has issues also with the list view. Other quirks and niggles that are too many to mention. Yes it was faster in parts but still has a long way to go before it reaches some level of maturity. However, by that time everyone will be chomping at the bit for 10.12.x

As above, Office 2016 works OK on build 15.15, likewise with Office 2011 on build 15.4.7.

It really depends what you are looking for and whether you are as OCD as I am when it comes to the level of detail. Which, IMHO is lacking in El Cap.

It has a long way to go before I try again, possibly 10.11.4 will be better than the cr*p that is 10.11.1. Oh and this was a clean install and not an upgrade. As always YMMV and your personal preferences will dictate whether you find it acceptable or not.

Mikzn when u upgraded did you have to reinstall Office. or was it still there when the install finished?

I installed a new SSD at the same time I upgraded to El Cap.

I did do a clean install of El Capitan beta back in august, then used migration to move the data and software from the old hard drive - yosemite to the new SSD - FWIW office 2011 did not work and I did have to re-install from my DVD copy - it would not keep the licence key at first and I tried re-installing office thinking that would fix the problem. It finally accepted the licence Key and worked.

You might experience some issues with selected applications. Office does not belong to those. You don't need to reinstall anything after upgrading, your apps and settings are preserved across the upgrade.

No worries, This helps me a lot. But I am still going to wait till a few other versions are release/updated before I upgrade. As this is what I usually do. But at least I know now that I should not have to reinstall MS Office.
