does anyone know why my desktop icons chronically freak out and get these 4 or 5 black bands across them? and is there a way to rebuild the desktop file in os x or is that not needed for some reason?

have you tried just relaunching the finder? Go to Force Quit, click on Finder, and then relaunch. Tends to sort out any problems such as unejected discs etc.

My friends ti500 did this so apple took it back (he is in legal!) and got a 667 back! Although I don't think the sleeping etc.. helped him!

are you ****tin' me? NOW i wish i hadn't taken my imac apart!!!!

but seriously, i've tried force quitting and that sometimes doesn't work (remember it's chronic, so sometimes even if i do a full restart, it doesn't work but sometimes it does). i don't see what sleeping it would do but i guess i could try it next time.
a further note, the most recent incident was my hard drive icon. i had set the finder preferences not to show hard disk icons on the desktop and put an alias of my drive there instead (from "open" or "save" dialogues in ten you can't see the disks since physically the desktop is an actual folder and your disks are not physically there so i always had to scroll back and it got annoying{run-on}). i also gave that alias a custom icon but didn't change the actual disk's. the black band problem occured only to my hard drive alias (in the past it's always happened to a seemingly random few desktop icons). i restarted and force quited amoung other things, but i only got rid of the bands when i "Cut" the custom icon from it. go figure.....i think

full size icons?

Mac Freak,

are the icons that have black bands native OS X icons or are they custom icons? If they are custom, are they 128-bit (insn't that the right size)? I've noticed icons from OS 9 sometimes won't display correctly and aqua freaks out when you look at it while in Classic.

Side note to all:

Can't wait to show off my new multimedia web-sites to you guys (sorry no flash yet; I'm waiting for Live Motion 2). I'd eventually like to become accepted in these forums for who I really am and not for the few posts that I've had (which have never been very successful).

if a powerbook series gets discontinued, they send you one of the new models...like if you had a Pismo 400 and it was beyond repair and still under apple care you might be able to talk them into sending you a Ti 667 Combo...i know of two people that have done that one now...

I've found that simply logging out, and then logging back in fixes a lot of display and/or settings problems.
