OS X Public Beta Access Utility says it needs 10.11, then quits

Running El Capitan on two machines without any trouble, so I decided to enrol my wife's machine (different iCloud account/Apple ID). I went to the beta reg page and downloaded the OS X El Capitan Public Beta Access Utility.

I ran it - and it immediately comes up with an error, saying it needs OS X 10.11. I have no option but to hit okay, and it just quits.

The computer in question is a new Macbook Air, running 10.10.5.

Does anyone have an idea on how to get around this? Or should I just sign in with my Apple ID, download the El Capitan GM from the App Store, install it, then try the utility?

Yes, you need to install the GM candidate to enroll another Mac, and no, you won't need to run the beta access utility after.

But that does mean that, if I was not already in the beta program, then I wouldn't be able to enrol now - because I would not have any machine already running El Capitan.

Seems like that could be a bug?

I am having the same issues on a late 2011 MBP currently running OSX 10.10.5. The only difference is that I new to the Beta testing program and missed he GM release. Am I out of luck? After 30 minutes of rooting around the Developer/Enthusiast Forums this is the only thread that I can find on this issue.

If that is the case, then Apple needs to fix the Public Access Utility ASAP.

Once you register for the beta program, you will get a link to redeem the 10.11 installer in the App Store application. If you have already registered, you will see the installer in the "Purchased" section of the App Store application. Once you've downloaded and installed the main installer, you could run the beta utility. It's working as it should.

Are you trying to download the 10.11.1 beta? You need to download the 10.11 GM Candidate first, and that does not require the utility.
There's a link with a big blue button which says "Download the OS X El Capitan Public Beta" which is just a link to the App Store with your redemption code embedded.
To get to that page, click the "enroll your Mac" link under "Getting Started." This doesn't actually do the enrolling. That link downloads the entire installer, which you can run, and then after 10.11 is installed, you update to 10.11.1.

I was having the same problem as the OP -- no download or redemption code listed on that page, and the installer failed in the same way.

Apple must have just fixed the problem, because just now I checked and there *is* a download link just as you (chrfr) described. A simple click, and I'm downloading the GM.
