OS X Server Preferences Error

Hi,

I've just recently installed OS X Server 10.5.4 and all went fine, etc etc, but when I try and open Server Preferences it asks me for the server name, which I put as Server.local (I've even tried 192.168.1.11 (the ip)) and my user name and password.
It then comes up with the error message
'An error occured while trying to get the server's status

Authentication succeeded but an error occured while trying to get the state of the server. Please try connecting again'.

Any help on this would be massively helpful, as I have no idea whats the problem.

edit. I forgot to note that it is installed on a G5 Tower 1.8ghz Single. No remote servers etc are involved.

Try entering 127.0.0.1 (the loopback address). It worked for me when I had that problem. I am not yet sure why this OS X server isn't working with it's own name or IP but I bet it has something to do with the OS X DNS service or lackthereof depending on if you added it as a running service.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately it hasn't worked. It still comes up with the same error message. Is there a way of resetting it all up? (bar reinstall). Also a tutorial of some sort of setting it up (I think this may have been where I went wrong).

OS X Server Preferences Error

I am experiencing the same error on Snow Leopard Server. Has anyone identified a fix for this problem?

Strange thing is that sometimes it lets me in, but I usually end up with a message that says:

 An error occurred while trying to get the server's status.
Authentication succeeded, but an error occurred while trying to 
get the state of the server. Try connecting again.

Please help!

Solved

I have solved this problem for myself. I had two users with the same long name. It was authenticating the local user, and not the network user. Using the correct user's short name fixed the problem.

I think my problem is similar. The user name is the same on the admin Mac and on the Server. I think the easiest way for me is to reinstall the SL server software on the Mini server using a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Originally I had configured the mini server using a remote admin computer.

I don't know much about setting up a server in a home environment. The server is visible on the iMac and I can use screen sharing to access it but I can not use the Server Administration app to get to the server?

yeh its likely that the credentials are conflicting then. is it possible to VNC/share screen into that machine?
