Has anyone added the OSX server utilities bundle to their mini? Specifically, I am thinking about setting a VPN server on mine so I can access it "networked" remotely... just looking for real-world cases here.

I have a 2005 mac mini running OSX 10.5.5 Server. I don't bother with the VNC stuff as i connect via my Macbook Pro and just use screen sharing / networked drives as it's only upstairs.

VPN, not VNC. Screen Share, I agree is suitable for "in home" work. VPN is for remote (not at home) network participation --- so, something like Screen Share can be used, even when I am in another state.

What uses/advantages did you find with OSX Server?

The main issues i've had is just finding things, its annoying having server prefs and system prefs but that may just be me. Sorry for the terminoligy of whay you were trying to do, not used it for that... Yet

the VPN in MAV is broken... for some people (including me) there are some forums on this both here and the apple discussion boards. So if you want to use VPN then you should run ML for now. From what i understand the 10.9.1 update (when it comes, hopefully with the nMP) will be fixing this issue. but until then it's a bit of a hit or miss.

Also i really like the new server app 3.0.1. my experience with the profile manager on it was much better than before. also you get lots of cool things like update cashing, net boot and net install images. overall i like it quite a bit :D (minus the VPN crapshoot)

haven't used the wiki but i love the cashing as i have multiple systems to update, the net boot and install are also great :d and best is the improvement in the profile manager functions :D

congrats btw. and let us know if your vpn works :D

Haven't touched the VPN section every since I saw the reports about it being broken. I do use logmein to remote back.
