OS X Takes Very Long Time to Startup

Hmm... this is kind of bothering me. I have a 17" 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro and it takes a very very long time to start up, and once the desktop comes up sometimes the spotlight logo will come up and it will just sit there for 3 minutes or so before Finder starts (if you roll the mouse over the spotlight logo it will turn into the spinning wheel). What really puzzles me is that I have a 1.8GHz iMac G5 that beats the MacBook in start up easily! What is going on with this thing? How can I speed this up and solve my spotlight issue?

Sys Prefs --> Accounts --> Startup Items tab: anything useless in there?

Also try: Sys Prefs --> Startup disk --> and select your startup disk from here. (Do any bootcamping lately?)(ie mines Mac OS X, 10.4.9 on Macintosh HD.

All that's in the Login Items tab is iCal Schedular and my mouse driver (both on the iMac too). I've never ran bootcamp on here, and the drive is selected.

It's especially slow on the grey screen with the Apple and before the Login Window comes up (where it says Starting OS X and the bar goes across).

This happened to me. Start up was taking longer than it had when the computer was new. I don't know what caused it, but I feel like it was from learning to use the operating system and playing around with some things I shouldn't have?

Long story short, I Archived and Installed because I messed something up - and it's been running smooth and quick ever since.

this was recently happening to me.

i decided to reinstall the operating system. you can save all of you documents if you choose under options to save your home folder and user profiles. it will be running like new in no time!
