macOS OS X Yosemite: API for Spotlight

Hi,

is there an API for spotlight in OS X Yosemite? I think there is no API, right? Pretty unfortunate. That would be a great feature for developers. Evernote or other applications could use it so that we can search notes or whatever. Maybe in the future?

You can make metadata queries now. This capability has existed since the first Spotlight.

You didn't say what you want to search for, in what resources, so I don't know if that answer your question or not.

I thought a more comprehensive API would be great so that applications like evernote can support it (to search notes with a preview from spotlight) or skype could hook into the calling function for contacts. Personally, I would be interested in site-specific web searches (e.g. my university library) or getting results from a sqlite database from a search term.

Spotlight doesn't show previews of images., it's QuickLook that does it.

It was possible to take over Spotlight in Mountain Lion and Mavericks, I hope a similar trick will work in Yosemite.
