Noobie here... will installing this beta erase all my current data? or just overwrite the OS and i'll still have all my pictures, apps, etc.

Unless something gets screwed up during the installation, your data will still be there after the upgrade, but if you find your pictures and other data worthy of not losing, backing up before a system upgrade is never a bad idea.
And even if you will not upgrade, backing up is kinda important with data you cannot recreate. Unless you have the money for data recovery of course.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I have all my worthy saving stuff on flash drives and stuff.. Well here goes! Hoping all goes well ahaha.

If you have a large enough external hard drive, having a Time Machine backup in addition to your flash drive saves would help facilitate going back to Mavericks – if you so choose. Your Air has 512 GB, so a HD large enough to hold the backup would be relatively inexpensive and often in stock in many places.
