OS X Yosemite virgin asks

Hiya. I currently have a new Macbook Air with the new OS X Yosemite. Coming from OS Mavericks and PC from a few months ago i consider myself a virgin when it comes to this.

I'd like to ask is it now possible to transfer files (photos, music albums, videos, etc.) from my Mac to an iOS device (i'm planning to get the new iPad mini) with ease and without use of iTunes?

Please help. Thank you.

I'm using DeskConnect for that.
Or put your files in Dropbox and open them with Readdle's Documents on the iPad. Not sure if it can open music files though...

Apple About Continuity and this MacRumors article How to Get 'Handoff' Working in OS X Yosemite and iOS 8. Plus when you download an App from the iOS store that it works with their Mac App Store Apps and iCloud capable.

Can you explain your aversion toward iTunes in this circumstance? That may better help us find a solution.

I don't have any aversion or hatred towards iTunes. I think it is still a vital part of owning an iOS/OSX device and helping you with things.

But as i have asked if there is an easier way (i.e. without iTunes or connecting my i-device to my Mac using a cable) as in a wireless way using OS X Yosemite then i will be very happy.

My aim is just transferring basic multiple files such .pdf, .mp3, .mp4, .jpeg or .doc files.

Well:
PDF - DropBox
MP3 - iTunes iCloud or Handoff
MP4 - DropBox, iTunes, Etc Handoff capable apps.
JPEG - Photos App, iCloud, Third party iCloud capable
DOC Files - Pages on a Mac and on the iOS, iCloud, Handoff, third party applications in Mac and iOS

As a Mac newbe I highly suggest getting the shareware 1Password to manage your numerous web passwords now while new. It will make surfing the web so much easier.

You need some sort of transfer app to do this, there are many for purchase that do this, what's wrong with just using iTunes ?

I have Dropbox so that's ok for my PDF files. Handoff is more like "continuing where one left off" but not about transfering files. is this correct?

MP3's & MP4's i can use iTunes no problem at all. Would still be nice tho if a wireless way to transfer files between Apple devices were existing. But does AirDrop do that?

It's very easy to setup n use either direction .. iPhone > Mac or Mac > iPhone..

But is it true transferring files from a Mac to an iPhone/iPad can be done via Airplay but only for "small" or limited number of files?

Anyone heard of the Photo Transfer app? Is this also good?
