After updating to Yosemite the typical green button that stabilizes the window became a full screen button which was annoying. You have to press Alt+ the full screen button to make it stabilize the screen.

Is there any way to make the green button function as it used to be in old OS Xs?

No, I'd say if apple changed how its going to act, there's no way (at least for now) to alter that behavior.

Option click it.

Or from Dock settings, uncheck the double click on menu bar to minimise app to dock, and the default of double clicking the menu bar should be the one you are looking for :)

In some apps, yes.
(Aperture in the screenshot - but it's not update for Yosemite yet so maybe the green button will change it's function in the next update)

As well as using the double click the title bar way, you can use BetterTouchTool. Just use the "Leftclick Green Window Button" trigger, the blog post has more info.

Yes to this.

Thank you so much. I guess this is the only solution for now!

How hard can it be to position the mouse above the green circle and hit "option" key.

Also, how many times a day do you have to change the size of a window for this to be annoying and even creating a thread about this?

I see it similarly to the missing New Tab button in Safari. I used to click it all the time ... now I just click Command + T.

The Option-click is easy enough to remember and integrate into my routine. I actually like it ... now that I know the option is there.

Well, there must be something wrong with your installation, I can see the button just fine, with or without the Favorites Bar on.

I also use the Command + T for a new tab, I find it easier and faster.

Just some info:
On June 27, 2014, Apple announced that they would cease development of Aperture and work on a transition to their new Photos app.
Likely no more updates.

to return to the old functionality, i believe you'll want to use this setting:
(zoom window below cursor)..
i only briefly tried it but it appears to do as you desire.

..
but hey, i gotta turn this thing off now.. i personally just like the default yosemite behavior ;)
Setting BetterTouchTool like this works fine to restore the old behavior as well, although not really more reliably:

A couple things I've noticed is that it fails to work while zoomed-in using OS X's built-in Zoom, as well as in some apps like iTunes and TextWrangler. Otherwise, this solution does work in most situations.

i'll refer back if i get into an experimenting mode or feel a need to go back to the legacy behavior.
