OS8.6 to 9.1 - OS install

is there a way to upgrade from 8.6 to 9 without losing any info on the drive, or does it have to be formatted....

For instance....if i have documents saved on the drive....can i install os9 without losing them? if so, how?

Next question......regardless of above answer...how on earth would i go about installing a new OS on these things....im only familiar with the windows install....
 
Yes... by finding an OS 9 Install CD, inserting it, and clicking "Install" - and not changing any of the default settings.

The installer works just like any other software installer. You never have to leave the OS, except to restart after the install is finished.

If you wanted a format and install, that would mean you boot from the CD (which boots into a full Mac OS finder), "initialize" your disk using the Drive Setup utility, and then running the installer again.
 
right well thats logical...but unlike windows there are no million file directories of totally inintelligible titles that kill everything if you touch em....

basically...what you see....is whats there. right?
 
In OS 9 what you see is generally what you get. There are some invisible files, but not that many. In OS X, there are TONS of invisible files and it is a completely new way of computing for the computer (the systems are very different). The experience feels very similar because of amazing work by Apple's engineers to retain the ease of use of earlier OSs. If you can, I highly recommend getting OS X.
 
To go from 8.6 to 9 I believe you will have to boot off of the CD. Just hold down C with the OS 9 install disk in the drive. There should be an upgrade option that only upgrades and touches files in the System Folder, leaving everything else pretty much how it is.

That said, there isn't much point in that upgrade. 8.6 and 9 are very similar and you almost never find an app that requires 9 and won't run in 8.6. To top it of 8.6 will be a little faster on your Mac so I wouldn't bother. But that is just my opinion.
 
honestly....my resoning for 9 is user switching.

I plan on upgrading to jag or panther.....but i need to jam the laptop full of ram first....which at the moment..i cannot afford. so if anyone has two 256 sticks of mem for me....let me know....=P

the copy of OS9 i got happens to be in .img format. My only other machine is a PC. Is there a way for me to burn the img to CD using my pc to get the mac to boot off of it?

img burn, alcohol 120, and nero so far dont "support this file format".

Unlike with OS X, you don't need to boot from the installation media in order to install OS 9. You can install directly from the .img file while booted in MacOS 8.6.

sweet....and no its doesnt...always so quick to assume....;D

Bought it for a few bucks from a buddy of mine who made a backup of his own....now he cant find the disk....all he had was this file

Yes it does. You just did something wrong.

What format is the disk image? It has to be a .img NOT a .dmg from Mac OS X, or a toast image, or any kind of windows-related-image. Also you need the Apple Disk Utility to open a .img.

oh oh well that could be this issue....

Edit: where can i find this...for OS8.6?
