OSX 10.10 adding support for AMD R9 290x in Mac Pro

This just popped up over at Nektas, and apparently the 290X works out of the box. Although there are no tests for performance, stability or anything really.

Looking forward to what happens, as it identifies as HD 8xxx, and I would have expected it to say FirePro under OSX.

Wouldn't be called out as a FirePro, as that would have to be defined in the EFI. This card doesn't even have the EFI written to it right now, so OS X looks for it's device id (something like 697a) and then matches it to which kext has that device ID. This happened to be 8xxx series, and then that is what it drops into System Profiler

I wonder if this means Apple/AMD are looking to include Hawaii-based GPU in Macs soon.

I also wonder if AMD has some cheesegrater Mac Pros they're testing these drivers on.

Most likely, because they put only 6x mDP framebuffers in these drivers.

I'm hoping for it on all accounts.

If the card did I identify as a FirePro it would be a dead giveaway. Although this is a very good step in the right direction. I'm sure Apple and AMD are cooking up some really well binned W9100's to squeeze into the nMP as well.

Hopefully the OpenGL drivers are up to par for the cards as well. So looking forward to seeing what happens.

You could easily do it via the About This Mac strings file, or once the EFI is made for it you would easily be able to just open it in a hex editor, and scroll down to about 65366 (somewhere around there) and then you would just have to change the name. Same principle applies to flashing 280X's, as the EFI made for them would call it out as a 7970 (as that is what it really is)

It could mean a variant of the W9100 Firepro is destined for a refresh of the nMP at some point.

I know I was talking about why it was called out as 8xxx instead of Firepro. I would personally just name it R9 290X in the EFI, but to each his (or her) own.

Has anyone managed to get the R9 290 working in a Mac Pro?

Has anyone managed to get the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 (SKU ID: 11227-00-40G) working in a 2008-2012 Apple Mac Pro?

We several Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 graphics cards (to install into the Apple Mac Pro's) and we're trying to figure out how to add driver support to OS X for the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 / Radeon R9 290 to the latest Mac OS X.

If I go into the "Graphics/Displays" Hardware section it shows that the Sapphire card (in Slot 2) is installed, but it only displays the name "Display".

The properties of the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 graphics card are:
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x67b1
Revision ID: 0x0000
Kernel Extension Info: No Kext Loaded

In Windows 8.1 we couldn't get the AMD Catalyst Drivers to install and couldn't get Catalyst Control Center to install (but it was because we had a Radeon HD 2600XT graphics card in slot 1). Once we pulled the Radeon HD 2600XT graphics card out of the Mac Pro, and put the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 into slot 1, then Windows 8.1 (64-bit) worked properly with the graphics card and with the latest Catalyst 14.9 drivers.

Now we are trying to figure out how to get the card working properly with OS X 10.10.

Any ideas?

It has to be the R9 290X. The clue is Kernel Extension Info: No Kext Loaded
