OSX 10.4.9 + display rotation + nvidia

Just a quick note to let people know that you can rotate your displays with the default nvidia card and osx 10.4.9.

I had read in a number of places (this forum and others) that this was not possible with the macpro + nvidia. However I can report that it works for me with osx 10.4.9 and the default nvidia card.

Note: font anti-aliasing doesnt work properly, so you probably want to turn that off if you rotate your screen. Hopefully leopard will address this issue, as apple has an open bug on this.

This was reported here the day 10.4.9 came out. As for the anti-aliasing bug, I wouldn't know since I have it always turned off (thank Heaven for TinkerTool!). Yeah, I'm one of those people who think anti-aliasing sucks.

This has probably been mentioned elsewhere already, but I wonder if this addition of rotation support is pointing at features of new ACDs. Many have been pining for new displays (myself included) and NAB presents a plausible venue for such a release. Either way, I am glad that they added the support.

Weirdly, this feature has been popping in and out of OS X for some time. I think, circa 10.4.0, there were one or two dot revisions of Tiger in which most Macs, including those with integrated displays, could get access to the rotation option if you held option down while clicking on the displays entry. There's a thread here somewhere about it. And then it mysteriously disappeared. It's at least good that it's back for displays like the Dells that have rotation. It would be nice if the Apples rotated... 30" surrounded by 2x20" verticals?
