allright so OSX.2 is scheduled for release in late summer, probably in the new Power Macs. Now will OS 9.2.2 still be offered along with OSX Jaguar?

Does apple have enough faith in Jaguar to completely drop OS 9 or will it still lean on it for support with apps not yet offered for OSX?

There is no way Apple will drop OS 9 yet. There is just too much stuff yet to be ported, many audio apps, for example. Too many people still use OS 9 for Apple to give up on it completely.

Like I said in another thread a week or two ago, I haven't used 9 for months, but I still wouldn't feel comfortable without knowing it's there, just in case.

I think some of the last bastions of Classic-ness that needs to be addressed before moving to OS X only are sounds apps (Pro Tools) and hardware drivers (printers, scanners, etc.)

If Apple no longer includes 9 with new machines, the buyers who have old hardware/software probably still have 9, so no big deal.

BUT, if they drop Classic support and possibly even the ability to choose 9 as a startup disk...that would be bad.

I wouldn't see any reason for Apple to change it from how they've got it now... Booting OS X and OS 9 & classic are still there to run all the programs which lazy developers are still yet to carbonize (eg real networks)... Speaking of Carbon, did anyone here attend or know someone who attended the WWDC and who is willing to go completely against their NDA with Apple and tell us whether any Carbon improvements should be expected???

It'd be cool.

I would like them to do it, but I'm not sure they will.

I think that OS X will be "ready for primetime" this fall and that it could stand on its own. But I think Apple will leave it there as a crutch.

Maybe they'll drop it early next year??

It will be here for some time. You can not ask a company/person to upgrade ALL of their software imediately. The costs are way too high.

New apple users may not care as they will be going out and getting new software for their new computer. But older apple users have alot already invested.

OS 9.2 CD's packaged along with a new computer is cheap even for the next 5 years. (think of all the crappy AOL cd's that are flying around)

Pissing off long time Apple users is much more expensive.

I'm ready, but not everyone is...

...and Apple knows this.

I haven't used OS 9 once since PS 7 og Flash MX shipped, and I'm not going back... But classic will still be with us for some time to come, although Apple has dropped further development. For those of you scared of classic disappearing in Jagwire: Have any of you really looked at the screenshots posted everywhere on the 'net??? Jagwire will actually have INCREASED classic support.

The Digi rep I spoke to in March hinted at a Fall release for OS X support and the remaining elements from the HD line. I can't see it happening before 10.2 (or .5, whatever - "Jagwire").

And while ProTools is my main OS 9 anchor, I think realplayer and windows media player are two big reasons why 9 isn't going anywhere yet. You'd have a lot of pissed off new imac-owning mac virgins if they found out they were completely unable to play these file formats.

We'll I fly solo

I don't even have OS 9 installed. I initialized the HD and put X on. Thats all I need. If someone doesn't run on X, then I don't want to run it.

WMP

You can get WMP for OS X from microsofts website. Real has a beta of their software for OS X, but not a final version like WMP is. Personally I think those companies should just put codecs out for Quicktime. I hate having multiple programs just to DISPLAY media. It's like having a separate Preview for Jpeg, Gif, PDF, and others. For editing I understand maybe different apps, but not for viewing.

I haven't used OS9 in a long time, all my progs (except Dreamweaver, which is coming soon) are now on OS X and better than ever :D
However, as others have already said there are still many people who heavily rely on OS 9 and so I believe it would be a mistake for apple to drop it all together.

10.2 is bundeled with a MIDI/sound utility, maybe that has something to do with it.

Note: i have never tried Pro Tools, but i know it's some kind of a sound app.

I just got a tibook and all the audio software I use is OS 9. Many companies have announced OS X develpoment but a scant few have products you can buy today. Pro Tools for OS X will hopefully be a kick in the pants for the other companies. Digidesign is the 800-pound gorilla of the audio world and many software companies use Pro Tools compatibility as a selling point.

I've only used OS X for a few days now and I already can't wait to be done with 9.

Not A sound app THE sound app for proff sound development. :)

OS9 isn't going anywhere

Especially for audio apps! I use a program called Max/MSP that has around 500 or more third party plugins that will all have to be updated in order to bring the program to OSX. People who use it joke that we'll be the very last people still "double booting."

I think OS9 will still be a viable platform for years to come ( for better or worse :) )

Audio apps are a problem and so are too many Final Cut Pro and After Effects filters. These are slowly but surely coming out, at least.

I've addressed this problem too many times to mention (and no one else here seems to care), but OS X cannot recognize Mode-2 CD's. Meaning that all Video CD's require you to boot into OS 9 in order to view them. This is a major shortcoming with OS X and no one - including Apple - can give me a good reason why this is so. It's inexcusable for any modern OS not to be able to recognize Mode-2 discs!

It's all rather suspicious, to say the least. I wonder if Apple is deliberately crippling the OS in order to force people to use DVDs only, i.e. - force you to use a Super Drive. I confronted an Apple tech with this charge and was met with a sheepish "no comment".

I really hope that 10.2 fixes this problem, but it seems to me that Apple doesn't *want* to correct this.

(I'd happily wipe OS 9 off my HD if I could just watch VCD's on OS X. Isn't it absurd that I have to keep OS 9 only for THIS?!)

I sure hope not! Jeez, what are those audio people doing?? (probably it's not their fault, but..) :( there is so much good audio stuff in Os X, like 32 bit recording capability (for future hardware!), and built in CoreAudio and MIDI.

COME ON! I wanna record on OS X! My school's studio has ProTools, and I'm sure they will want the OS X version!

i wouldnt want os9 to go yet since its just like if netscape got rid of the mail & newsgroups feature on netscape 7 in favour for webmail and web newsgroups (by using navigator instead of mail) since ppl wouldnt be ready for it yet (just an example)

Amen to that!!!
It should be like preview that opens all formats, QT should be able to play all formats.

ummm... I like the idea VERY MUCH, BUT it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that MS (and real too!) are going to give up, and let qt play their files... 'cause they're darn power hungry, and $$ hungry!!!

ahem, I believe there is an app, actually that can handle VCDs in OS X.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/macvcdx.html

It says "demo", but I'm sure they have a full version... check it out..

and yes, I know this is a double post, but when it's a convenient time here in Japan, NOONE is browsing, as usual... sad sad sad...
