OSX is not fast.. period!

Ok, I gave up and installed Jaguar in my dual 500. I place the OS in one of the partitions.

Now, there are lots of good things, nothing that I was looking for really. The real impruvment is the multitasking function and things run smoothly and it is more stable but...

I have 3 computers, the dual G4 500 with 320 of ram and the 2 Poerbooks G3 500 with 250MB of ram each.

I'm runing a software calle Artmatic Pro 3 for OSX in the dual and the 2.5 for clasic on the Pismos.

Now, the dual is 1/3 slower than the Pismos. I mean 2 G4 500, more ram, OSX and it is slower?

besides that I do not see any plication runing faster under OSX, Quicktime movies freezes between frames as it does in Clasic and I can tell there are a few good things but Clasic still a much reliable system. I still not able to use my epson printer under OSX, neither the Agfa scanner, forget about the Aurora video capture card.

It is a mistake to jump a 100% in to OSX yet, personally I do not recomend it. Now, by the end of the year I may see something that would be a good investment, but for now if you make me choose between the latest Mac and the lates PC I will take the PC, I can do more with it than with the Mac.

Now, I'm a powerbook person, no laptop is gonna make me doub about powerbooks. I think the 12" fully loaded is a hit.

You mean the one which only runs X?

This may be directly related to your lack of support for Quartz Extreme. That will bog down your proc a LOT.

On the other hand, I have had improved performance in many aspects of the system on an old Graphite 500 MHZ, as has my buddy with a Graphite 450 MHZ.

i'm lacking quartzextreem on my g3 imac and although the osx interface can be slower than 9 at times, if you've installed all of the jaguar updates, it's certainly not a slow machine. a completely unsupported graphics card will slow things down, but any supported agp card or pci radeon/gforce will suffice. make sure that you are running maintainence scripts and repairing permissions. other than that, the program you are using may not be optimized for osx. back in the 10.0 days, almost every single carbon app ran slower in x than in 9. now, developers have updated and things are running quite well.

I have to say that on my dual 533 OS X is very snappy, my 500 mhz ibook is a slight bit sluggish, but definately does not affect what I do with it: web browsing, email, chat...

I isntalled the OSX last week and the OSX version of Artmatic thean I'm using came out a month ago or so.

BTW, if you are a graphic designer or an animator go to www.artmatic.com this software rules big time, download the demo.

Now, the multitasking function in osx is perfect but there was people telling a year ago "wow, osx is so fast!" I do not know but I can't tell the difference that much today. There is a 10% in improvments, the video works long way better but guys, this OS needs work. And I do not get why Artmatic runs faster in the Pismos.

About the 12" Powerbooks. I know they are OSX only but for the job I want to do they are the way to go, the software that I'm using with them runs perfectly on Clasic and OSX. Look:

I'm a VJ, what I want to do with the powerbooks is to get 5 of them fully loaded to create a video wall. The diagram is missing some elements (for security reason), but I can have a set of images per key, in this case I can have 76 different set of images creating a real time interactive videowall. Just imagine 5 (it can go up to 8) videobeams sincronized with the DJ in real time. Whata rave!

Of course this is more for corporate events. On the other hand, in studio, I would use the powerbooks connected via airport for network rendering. I may need maybe a simple Powermac or any other computer as a server and main computer, it could be a 17" PB! I just need the money but it can be found.

there is a major difference between perceived speed and actual speed. i think OS X wins hands down vs. OS 9 when it comes to real life things. OS 9 is nice and snappy, but I have never really had anything but problems with it. I am a multitasker, which places me in direct conflict with the entire design of OS 9's capabilities. I want to be ripping a CD, burning a CD, copying files across the network, downloading stuff, installing stuff, and generally surfing the web at the same time. Any time I have even attempted half of that on OS 9 I encountered nothing but hard freezes and GUI unresponsiveness. Its great that the menus pull down a half millisecond faster in OS 9, but when it comes to functionality, I can get 4x the work done in OS X than I can in any other OS during the same period of time.

I have a 450 sawtooth and, yeah, I needed a better card....So I bought a AGP RADEON 64 MEG video card..Wow, what a difference...
