OSX on G3/333 PB?

this is my first post, so please bear with me.

i'm hoping my faithful G3/333 (bronze keyboard, 390some MB of RAM, SCSI , USB, a MIGHTY 4Gb HDD, DVD drive via a third party drive and funky PCMCIA card thingy, ok, i was too cheap to get the 400 at the time, c'99) will be able to handle tiger, or do i leave it on 8.7.3? i am upgrading from some M$ WinDon't 98 boxes (don't ask, i inherited them with the business) that refuse to talk to my little black beauty to some iMac G5's that will.
perhaps in some stripped down/funky graphics turned off fashion.

this machine won't have to do major gruntwork, just be able to access Address Book, Mail, Safari (Mozilla?), a few widgets and maybe a little iPhoto. all the heavy work (Adobe CS2) will happen on the iMacs, but a useable laptop with access to some of the new OS's funky stuff would be nicer than OS 8.?/9.? no?

any advice or thoughts or links muchly appreciated.

It's gonna be painfully slow pal, and dont expect to do very much with it, I'd hate to say.

I had 300 MHz Wallstreet, and it was slow as HELL. More RAM will help your situtation, but whats going to hurt you is the lack of Altivec, and the lack of VRAM/better video chipset.

But, if all you want to get it to do is talk to the iMacs, and some light surfing and such, you shouldnt have much of a problem. May wanna go with Panther instead of Tiger, since its supported offically, so you dont need any hacks, which could run into problems down the road. Good luck buddy! Keep us informed.

thats pretty much what i 'spected. slooooww. but yuh, pretty light stuff. viewing & e-mailing pix will be the hardest "grunt" work it'll "need" to do. i'm happy to run 8.6 on it (where is that cd...) as it'll run photoshop & illustrator perfectly well. e-mailing aint a drama either. and at least Tiger will talk to 8.6 wheras, and don't even try to explain it to me again, i can't get 9.2 to talk to Win98.

i expect to be turning off all the funky graphics effects.

i would like iCal & suchlike on the lappy, hence the possible OS tweak-a-thon

unfortunatly, i can't whack panther on it as i don't have (and won't get unless less than legitly) a copy. havn't got the iMacs yet, so will get Tiger with them. bout three to five weeks....


*sigh*, i remember when that 333 was considered "king ****" laptop and all those poor colleagues of mine with stingy bosses would swear and curse at their umpteenth M$ crash. not that i havn't had a few bombs myself, but at least my pix made deadline.

ok, linux perhaps? and i look at it this way. that 333 cost me a bit when i bought it, but six years later, it's still servicable and has a use in my business. unlike these four year old gateway Celeron 300!'s, which are an anathema to me.

six years and counting? in computer terms, i call that value for money.

Well, I have a 300Mhz G3 Tower I'm running 10.2 off of, because anything more than that and I'd have to use XPostFacto to install it. I tried Panther without it, and it just wouldn't boot the installer at all. Good luck with Tiger, though.

As far as speed, well, this tower serves me fine for light surfing, some Photoshop work, and mainly as a bittorrent machine. It's not painfully slow, but it'll take some getting used to.

I'd recommend giving Debian a spin, if you're into the experimentation. Obviously you're comfortable with pre-X MacOSes, which I'm not... but a good lightweight Linux might give you all the interoperability and perks that you need. Just an idea.

I have a Lombard with nearly the same specs as yours and I'm running Panther just fine.
