I was just wondering if there's some way of finding out how long my mac has been on.

oh and... I have an external HD which I use with my PCs but, if I connect it to the mac, OSX won't let me modify any of the files. Is there any way to get OSX to deal with external drive permissions differently?

A Mac can't write to an NTFS formatted drive, it can only read. Do you know what format it is? FAT32 will be readable and writeable by both Windows and OSX FWIW.

Launch a terminal and type

uptime

it should give all the info you need.

I think the drive must be NTFS since I have some really big files on it... that's sorta strange that OSX can't write to NTFS.

Not really.. Microsoft never released the information that Apple would have needed to make OS X write to NTFS.

Yeah, I don't think there's any really reliable (read: safe) write-capable NTFS filesystem drivers, due to lack of published specs. Filesystems aren't things you want to fark around with if you don't have the exact info.

Meh, your best solution is (getting gige cards for both Mac and PC and get) access to that drive over a network.

Or, format the drive FAT(32).

Or, not use Windows because it can't support any fs other than its own group of ntfs/fat/msdos/whatever. Which is a big pain when you have to work with 3rd party stuff like MacDrive to access other filesystems like hfs and ext2/3.

Funny, I thought OS X had NTFS write support, guess not.

Edit: okay, I was right, OS X includes _very_ limited NTFS write support using the mount_ntfs command:

There is limited writing ability. Limitations: file must be nonresident and must not contain any sparces (uninitialized areas); compressed files are also not supported.

Edit: okay, I was right, OS X includes _very_ limited NTFS write support using the mount_ntfs command:

"Limited" is an Apple euphemism for "almost non-existant". I've encountered almost no places where it wrote in a useful manner.

Are you sure that your flavor of Linux can write to a local mount (non-network mount) of NTFS?
