Hi I have zero experience with OSX server. I want to learn how to use it.
But before I buy it. I am wonder if it has MySQL and if it has repository server like GIT?

Also wondering is I already have Mavericks on my iMac, when I install the server,
would it wipe out the existing files on my iMac?

Thanks in advance.

I just installed it on my Mac mini and it did not effect any of the files on my hard drive.

The OSX Server app is a collection of utils and apps that are more commonly used when the machine is part of a network. Its an additional component and won't remove any files.

As for using it? What tasks do you want to learn? File Sharing, security, Web serving (this can be done without server), MySQL (again does not need OSX Server)?

it would help if you can give us plenty of detail as to what tasks and goals you are wanting from the server so we can advise on the best places to go for tutorials etc.

You can also find some useful info on Apples website.

Thanks for the reply.

Right now I use XAMPP for the web server, I use it to test my works, XAMPP comes with MySQL. I didn't read anything about MySQL on Apple's website, that's why I am curios if OSX Server include MySQL or any type of database server.

OS X Server installs and uses PostgreSQL, which is similar to MySQL without being chained to Oracle for licensing. It's not the same, so don't assume it'll work for MySQL tasks - it won't.

You can still install and use MySQL for free on your Mac, there are detailed how-to's on the internet you can locate using a search engine. Although XAMPP has a fully functional MySQL server built in - I would use that.

Thank you very much for your answer. That's very helpful to know. :)
