hi all... this may very well be a known fact but, for all like me, who tried a dozen things:

if the above problems hits you...
software updater unexpectedly quits and application installers do so after authentication:

you might want to check the following

*start terminal
*goto the root ( make sure you're in the root)
*check if there's a link called tmp
!!if not something removed it and causes the above

to correct this:
*in terminal still at root level type:
*sudo ln -s /private/tmp /tmp
*it will ask for your password enter you admin password

now try again if all goes wel the problem's solved

all this on os x 10.2.3 (maybe safari has something to do with it? only app i recently installed)

just wanted to share this info, pretty straightforward but usefull maybe
