Hi All,

I'm new to the Mac world, been a Windows developer for 15 years but I've just had enough and switched sides about bought my first ever Mac, a 2Ghz Dual PowerMac with 2GB RAM and I am very impressed by it. Makes XP looks like the giant turd it is

Anyway, my question. On OSX Tiger 10.4 I cannot play commercial DVD's in the build in DVD player - is this a known issue? Also, I thought I could uninstall the DVD player and fix the problem by downloading the 4.6 update. So I dragged the DVD Player from the Applications folder to the Trash Can and Emptied it (I know....I know) and tried to install the 4.6 update and it won't work.

Could someone please let me know how to get the DVD Player (4.5) back onto my system - I'm sure there must be an easy way

Sorry if this is really pathetic and trivial - I'm still learning

Neil

have you tried spotlighting dvd player in the Tiger install dvd?
Put dvd in, new finder window (with DVD selected) type "DVD Player" and see what comes up.
If this doesn't work i dunno.
I would have thought the upgrade (4.6) would have a brand new app in it though!

I just tried it for you, doesn't work, sorry! :(
It's not in optional installs>applications either :( :(
Hmm, best you'll get is a generous e-mail! I'll try zipping it and see how big it comes...

have you tried VLC?
I forget the URL, but it's a free program that I found on Source Forge.
I think it's region-free, too! ((but I could be wrong!))

Look for Pacifist. It allows you to extract an app bundle from the install CD/DVD. I've had no problems playing DVDs under Tiger, either DVD 4.5 or 4.6.

Fantastic, thanks very much, got the app reinstalled. Still having the same trouble though, it will either not play the discs at all or play the opening credits then corrupt and freeze. I've downloded the VLC program and it's great I'm just disapointed that the build in DVD player doesn't seem to be working. I don't think there is anything wrong with the drive as I've ripped a couple of hundred CD's into iTunes and I can read the Tiger install DVD

Is the DVD scratched? Cause I've had no problems playing DVD's either...

And welcome the Mac side, you've picked a sweet setup to switch with! :)

Thanks, it's a very nice machine. The DVD's were fine, I got it sorted out. I deleted the preferences file for the DVD app then launched it again and it's working great now - thanks to everyone for their help

Now there's a lesson to be learned!
1. Trash the Prefs
2. Repair Permissions

It's OS X gospel

Hi, and welcome to the Mac world! Are you using the optical digital audio output? If so, do you also have the optical audio input connected? I experienced the same issue that you have, and the solution was to disconnect the optical input. Also, go into the DVD Player preferences and select "Digital Out - Built-in Audio" if that's what you're using. I hope this helps.

Marc

Edit: before I put my two cents in. :) I'm glad you got it sorted out.

I had the same problem last night actually, all i did was shut my computer off for the night then turned it on this morning and everything works just peachy. I think it was because 1) I just upgraded to Tiger and 2) I just updated the dvd player.
