OSX v. OS9

I had a heated discussion with a friend about this topic the other day which in of itself is rather scary

He is a graphics designer having been a hardcore Mac user as far as I can remember.

I am a user of about two years and switched when OSX seem a viable alternative to W2K.

Now he is refusing to switch from OS9 saying that OSX has made the Mac a *rap machine and that it is not 'Mac' like.

Myself I would never have switched from W2K to OS9 but find OSX a far superior system.

For me it is things like multitasking and proper use of then expensive RAM etc. that made W2K better and finally OSX surpased that...

Are any of you out there seriously refusing to switch to OSX because you honestly think OS9 is a superior OS?

Well speaking for myself I prefere OS X, even on my 500Mhz iMac it runs quite happily. It is in many, many ways a far superior OS. I would think OS X now suits most peoples needs.

However i'm sure for some people OS 9 is more practical. Once 'tuned' (usually through finding a good combination of extensions/control panels) it can be quite stable. A trade off in OS X's multitasking features is that processes run slightly slower, which can be noticed especially on slower macs. It just depends on what apps you need to run and what you do on your mac.

I would suggest to your friend that he at least tries OS X but if he's happy with 9 then that's up to him. Perhaps, like I was, he is slightly scared of learning a whole new OS after using Classic for so many years?

People said the same thing when OS 8 came out and had the platinum theme instead of the classic Mac OS look. People are entitled to what they want to believe, but saying its not mac like doesn't strike me as meaning anything. it has the same conceptual ideas as the old mac os (global task bar, etc), and some new useful things, makes configuration a whole lot easier (first time i fired up OS X, it saw i was connected to a LAN and set me up automatically, now thats mac like). You can do things like burn CD's right form the finder. what does he want. its really hard to argue OS 9 is superior. on some machines its snappier, and people might be used to it, but there's just abotu nothing about it thats actually superior in design that I can see. OS X still needs some details worked out, but for the most part, it kicks OS 9's butt.

I shuold point out that OS X runs too slowly on my machine however and I use OS 9.

I find it interesting that he is a graphic designer and refuses to switch. Sounds a little close minded to me. OSX is better os in most aspects and continues to get better and better (with Panther I expect it to be the icing to be on the cake.)

I am too a designer and find that it has sped up my workflow, made everything that I do more productive, plus it is cool, it looks great, and it is fun to use,...and I could go on and on.

Your friend sounds like a couple of friends that I have that refuse to change because they are AFRAID to learn and to change, and learn something new.

Does your friend use quark too and think that it is a superior program?

Funny, I just had an argument with my friend about that very issue just 3 hours ago. He says that 9 is better because it's faster on his eMac. I find this hard to believe but I can't exactly prove it to him. I know that 10.2 is faster than 10.1, but was 9 faster than 10.1? I honestly don't remember. I just remember switching from 9 to X as soon as possible.

OS9 is better than X

I have 3 computers, one of them with X and my primary computer has 9.2.2.

I know all the wonders of OSX but Apple messed up with 2 important things:

1. Moving the menues on the top, now in place of a Apple menu items we have a useless Apple that can not be customized.

2. The new file managment even when is more "organice" is messy and very unpractical, comapred with OS9, OSX makes you waiste time when looking for a single file.

The problem are not the features behind, the problems are the features in front.

Many people (many, many!!!) feel this way about OSX, I do not care about unix stuff I do not use that , but the lack of customization is incredible and the file managment is messy and stupid compared with what we had with OS9.

No wonder Jobs changed the functionality in the new version, he realised there was (an still) a big problem with the file managment.

The Dock is ok but in OS9 I have better ways to get to my softwares, just creating an alias of my "Software" partition and placing it in the Apple Menu Items and that it!

With only fixing the problem with the extension OS9 would be just fine but well...

OS8 wasn't a big deal, that is another story but I never had a problem going from OS8 to 9, actually surprice me that there was a problem.

OSX is good but it doesn't help in what we use the most that is the file managment. Actually opening windows in OSX is slower than in OS9.


BTW, many people was saying that the first version of OSX was incredible!!! until the update was release, the same thing when Jaguar came out, now with the next update everybody is gonna say "Jaguar was crap" this new version Panther is better.

In my case I do not led my self flow with the advertising, I unpluged my self from the Matrix a long time ago. OSX needs a lot of work and let me tell you something that many of you hasn't realise...

Since the Ti Powerbook Apple is making their computers looks more like well design PC's, the same thing with the colorfull OSX interface, it is like a Windows interface (big funky icons) to make the PC people feels like home. With the new G5 the same thing is going on, the G5 looks more like a PC rather than an Apple product.

great older apps.

i find myself in both groups and wish apple allowed 3 desktop themes in panther. a vacant os9 type for speed and slower machines, 2. the default aqua and 3. one with more features for duals and g5's.

i find the main reasons people still use os9, myself included is:
1. they may have programs they like that only run booted in os9
2. the $129 yearly os upgrades and the added cost upgrading your old software and also.
3. they are comfortable with it, and dont want to learn anything new, it is stable and very easy to get around in. no permissions and very few updates.(hard disk update, itunes, logic 6.1, appleworks 6.2.7 were the latest ones).
4. a lot of musicians (me) know you can do pretty much anything in os9 you can do in osx and it is compatable with more i.e. read older hardware and there is more programs, some now very well priced for it.
but this is changing rapidly

5. os9 is much faster on older non upgraded systems, just try a high resolution scroll in photoshop on one of those machines in os9 and osx.
6. they consider steve jobbs funeral of their beloved os (os9 is dead speech) and the constant put downs and critisisms by those who use osx only, to be serious personal insults, and this makes them hold on tighter.
7. believe it or not my and many others os9 systems are very stable every bit as much as osx and run 2 or 3 programs at once very well and some games and apps better in os9, because of no i candy.
8. os9 major weaknesses and there are many is no protected memory you must actually figure out ahead of time how much memory to give an app.
no preemptive multi tasking.
one app can take over all other apps and temporarly freeze the systems.
although it is possible to run many apps at once, if they dont require much horse power. email, itunes, surfing, appleworks etc..
9. they can use kaliedeoscope and smooth type to get there os9 to look just like osx.
10.cheap or economically challanged or both.

that said osx is clearly the best os for recent mac owners, very polished and well done stable and preemptive multitasking and protective memory.
My wish is for apple to take a good look at the apps that only work booted into os9 (mostly audio apps or apps that take over the whole system) and do everything they can to get as many as possible to work in panther as this is the single most given reason other then speed.
many would love to get a g5, but they dont wont to have to upgrade thier os9 boot only software at the same time. this one undertaking will go along way to getting more people to osx and new machines more than anything else.

What new features do you want in "PANTHER" 10.3

I will keep it simple, as none of these are really needed but will help make you more productive and give easier navigation to the desktop.
1. OS9 style window shade double click in sys prefs.
2. tear off minime dock appswitcher of open apps OS9 style
3. shaded areas on the side of open windows and bottom
that will allow you to grab and move windows there
instead of top only.
4. a version of www.codetek.com virtual desltop to allow you
to have multple screens open with diff apps in each.
this will make small screen owners happy and dual monitor users more productive. download and try
you will never go back
5. choce of 3 interfaces, simplified for most speed, aqua, and extrem aqua for dual and 970 owners with more animations and graphic highlights.
6. new code to make it easier for developers to add altivec optimizations, dual cpu support and multi threading in thier apps
7. add more sherlock channels and faster browsing
8.video and voice chat for games and apps
9. add apple's version of widgets http://www.konfabulator.com/ too cool
10. a price of no more then $49 for ( Jag owners) $99 full retail. I own 10-10.1-10.2. if 10.3 is $129 that will be almost $400 in 3 years on just the OS (no apps), no wonder so many people still use OS9
