I'm still running Panther (yeah, I know) which is creating a problem with my new job - the fonts they are using are all OTF fonts, which is not supported by my OS. Is there any way I can fake it or convert them somehow to TTF fonts, or some other way to work around this issue?

According to this PDF from Apple, Panther supports OpenType.

We're running Panther at work and I haven't had problems. What exactly are you trying to do with the files? Activate them through FontBook or another font management program?
And which app are you trying to use them with? What happens when you try to install them? Please be as specific as possible.

You could try to convert them with TransType. This may or may not give you satisfactory results, OpenType fonts can contain larger character sets and often have features not supported by older formats. As you can see from the prices, an upgrade to Tiger may give you more bang for the buck if your Mac is able to run it.
If you happen to be using only Adobe apps, you can try dragging the font files to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts - this may allow the OpenType stuff to work without conversion.

Yeah, but it's limited support. Tiger was given some major ATS revisions to make OTF useful.
I'm trying to use them in Illustrator. I've never had problems downloading fonts to FontBook, ever, but the OTFs will supposedly download, then not work up in my programs. The name of the font will show up in the font list, but as one of those fonts that doesn't actually run - I can't even get a preview of it. Anything set in that font will just default to Myriad.
