"Other" in iPad Usage

When I am synching my iPad, from the iPad page under capacity, iTunes shows me the number of songs, books, photos, books, etc. at the bottom of the screen. I'm also showing something called "Other."

What is this? It is using up more than half of my storage on the iPad.

I'm new so someone hit me if i'm wrong. But generally in my experiance "other" is duplicated files. I usually unsync music, tones and videos and watch my other vanish to almost nothing and then resync it all.
