Keep in mind that Other is everything that is not Apps, Photos, Audio and Movies.

This includes the operating system, caches, documents, spreadsheets, the virtual disks for things like Parallels, etc.

If you want to investigate further, try the following command in a Terminal window:
Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /

This will show you how much space is used by directory. This will include the hidden directories such as /.MobileBackups.

When you have an area of interest that you want to drill down on, expand the "/" with additional directories, such as /Users to see how much each user is using.

"Others" includes everything else fail to fall into any other categories. This includes system files as well.
Mine is also huge and I am still looking for a chance to shrink it a bit but as long as free space is enough I don't want to mess up with it.
A few system files can be large, such as swap files (1GB each and OS X does not purge them automatically). And you may have some huge apps.

I remember reading that OSX routinely over-reports the amount of space taken up by "Other". Try searching for that.
