All,

I replaced my 2019 16" i9 MacBook Pro (full spec) with 2024 16" M3 Pro Max (full spec) and all four of my 2010 31" Apple cinema displays with two 49" Samsung Odyssey G9 monitors. I am genuinely amazed at the difference between the old and new setups. As a professor, I spend a lot of time in front of computers; this new setup is a game changer.

Those of you who upgraded from Intel silicon to Apple silicon can relate to the differences I am experiencing. I am pleased with Apple's direction.

Joe

Incredible, that's quite the screen real estate.

Would you care to elaborate on your field of research (from my cursive google search, public policy) and workflow therein ?

Very much appreciated =).

My research is varied. Early in my career, I examined the effects of communication technology on political behavior and public policy. I am working on a COVID-19 grant that explores the disparities in governmental response to COVID-19 in urban vs. rural areas.

I teach quantitative analysis at the graduate level.

My workflow typically involves gathering data through some instrument, cleaning the data, and then using linear and nonlinear methods to examine relationships between variables using regression models.

Boring stuff for most folks, but I am an electrical engineer by trade and examining data is, well, fun. :)

By the way, back to relevant information... one of my screens runs at 240Hz and the other at 120Hz. I have not been able to get both to run at 240Hz.

Thank you for the primer, we have very similar interests although at two very different points in our respective careers.

As for your query, you seem to be using two Thunderbolt enclosures each connected to a display, so the data transfer between the display and the computer does not seem to be the problem. Checking the Mx Pro's Tech spec [1] and some tablecloth calculations of throughput rates shows 6k at 60Hz to use up 34.56 Gbps where as the 5120*1440 at 240hz uses up 42.47 Gbps.

I'm not qualified to issue an opinion based on the arcane explanations contained within apple's tech specs, but I'd wager that the two displays cannot function at full spec in parallel. Whether the max chip could handle this is something I cannot comment on.

And regarding your initial comment about noticeable difference in QoL between intel and AS ... Silence and portability was the name of the game during my transition.

Best of luck,
Sam.

I still have one of those Logitech speaker set. Is that the Xserve RAID on top of the cabinet?

Good eyes,

Yes, that is an Xserve RAID. In my spare time, I am restoring an Xserve and an Xserve RAID; the cabinet you see is used for spare parts.

I love the Logitech speaker set. I have had it a long time and it still works great. My son said something to the effect of, "Why do you have such an expensive computer system and a crappy old speaker system" to which I replied, "Because it still works great, and I don't toss things that are still working fine." LOL
