Outlook for Mac 2016 vs Mac Mail?

Hello all,

I've searched the net over and over. Figured I would go directly to fellow Mac (MacBook Pro) users to get direct feedback.

Does anyone use Outlook 2017 desktop version (or even Outlook 2016) instead of Mac Mail?

My main use is for my business email; which is an email with a domain that I own for my real estate business.

I find that Mac Mail is lacking a lot of features from a business standpoint. Most importantly, the ability to track emails or receive read email receipts.

Any experiences switching from Mac Mail to Outlook 2016+ desktop versions, feedback or input is greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am running OS Sierra on a mid-late MacBook Pro Aluminum.

Hosted Exchange email? If not, Outlook will just run as a disconnected-from-contacts-and-calendar email client.

Also, email read receipts and tracking depend on the recipient's client. Other info on that here.

There is no outlook 2017 and the Mac version of Outlook 2016 does not support read receipts etc so other than having mail, contacts and calendars in a single app and being able to work with public folders etc its not better than mail. more of a personal preference.

Thanks for your input Marshall. Here is a screen shot of the outlook I'm running on my MacBook Pro. It's Outlook 2017 via the Microsoft 365 subscription. Haven't checked out all the features yet, but I'll be sure to see if the features you mentioned from 2016 are available in 2017 or not. Thanks again.

That's outlook 2016. The copyright and patch are dated 2017 but it's still outlook 2016.

How many recipients will check the box 'Yes' when asked if they want to send a receipt? I for one invariably say no. I just think the sender is being a bit too pushy trying to monitor when I check my mail and how long it takes to respond to them. Whatever the techinical abiltiy of the software, ultimately it's the user that decides whether you ever get a read receipt.

I'm looking at how quickly SPARK has fallen out of favour (see app store reviews) and wondering why so many developers have strived and failed to produce a killer email client. Now I'm thinking along the lines of Outlook or Mail.

Outlook in general is more powerful. You can set up rules and the search (at least on the windows versions) is more robust. I find the search on the outlook for MAC on par with Mac Mail but lacking overall as I sometimes like to search for different criteria like

From: Person A HasAttachments:yes (or *.xlsx) received:April 2017

Outlook also includes calendar and contact management and tasks but I do not use them favoring the default MAC apps instead.

I've been using the new preview for awhile and I'm really impressed with the performance and smoothness. Now that Google works fully with the program, I'm switching to it... mostly because I'm so used to the Windows version at work. The consistency is nice, especially when it comes to keyboard shortcuts

FYI: to use the calendar and contacts from Google, you need to be on the Insider fast track, not the slow.

Mail is a fuggly and stunted app, Outlook is vastly more powerful, easy to use and versatile. If one must avoid M$ products Thunderbird is also a powerful choice

Outlook for Mac is powerful, works better with Exchange (obviously) and I use is to segregate my corporate email/calendar account from my personal accounts. That said, I don't like it; performance is poor, the UI sucks and it lacks feature parity with it's Windows counterpart.

I much prefer Apple Mail. Works great with Gmail and my self-hosted IMAP servers. Search is fast and intuitive. Data detectors and integration with Calendar and Contacts is great. I also like the hooks into Automator too.

Thunderbird is the orphaned step-child of the Mozilla Foundation. It was great back in the day but they've let it languish and last I heard were looking to offload the project. I don't even use it on Linux anymore, let alone putting it on a Mac.
