2011 MMS here. Can I install 2.5" HDDs over 1TB?

Also noticed that 7200rpm 2.5" HDDs over 750GB don't exist. Seems odd.

More than 1tb is not available yet. Nobody makes any. Buy a 2tb external unless you are tight on space.

You can put one in if they are 9.5mm tall or less. 7200rpm drives over 750GB don't exist yet because the technology to be able to read such a microscope magnetic dot on such a fast moving platter isn't economically feasible to mass produce yet.

ok what about a 2TB 2.5" 5400rpm HDD to replace the 500GB 7200rpm HDD thats in my Mini server now? 5400 @ SATA is faster than FW800 anyway so it should be fine for Logic Pro / audio streaming don't you think?

Each of the drives needs to be 9.5mm thick or less. Maybe if you only fit one drive you could get the 2TB on in there, but I am not sure.

Most 2.5" notebook HDDs are based on a maximum z-height of 9.5mm. I should be able to keep the 7200rpm 500GB HDD that is being used for my system plus buy a 1TB 5400rpm notebook HDD for the second HDD thats in my Mini Server. Mini Server comes with two HDDs. I'm looking to replace the scratch disk.

Nobody makes 2tb yet. Not 2.5" anyway. Only 3.5" has 2tb as of now.

The 1tb drive that comes bundled with the goflex adapter is higher than 9.5mm? I thought there's also been a 2tb 2.5" external drive released by WD?

I was thinking about cracking open the casing on my 1tb drive when I get a Mac mini

I think I saw one the other day. 2TB, 2.5" but it was 12mm thick IIRC. I don't feel like searching for it again now but I could swear I saw it and was impressed.

Correct. 2TB 2.5" drives exist but they are Enterprise level drives which means they are 15mm thick which is too thick for any Laptop and/or Mini. They also put these drives into External enclosures since it doesn't matter how thick those are. 1TB is the largest 9.5mm drive.

Be careful cracking open the WD 2.5" HDD externals. I have a USB 3.0 version of their 1TB and it has a proprietary connection and not a standard SATA connection, so I couldn't gut it in the end.

Correct. I seem to remember you asking about >1TB drives however. Perhaps I imagined it ;-)

I have the older USB 2.0 version and yeah it's proprietary, the interface is as you said soldered on. Bah.

Perhaps it was your question "Can I install 2.5" HDDs over 1TB?" that confused me. I could have sworn you meant can you install 2.5" HDDs over 1TB. Silly of me.

I have a 2TB WD My Passport Drive, which is a portable drive powered via USB/FW and uses a 2.5" SATA HDD.

I also have the same external drive in a 1TB size.

The 2TB drives are noticably thicker - even the entire external case is slightly thicker. The mac mini uses 9.5mm drives to fit into the small form factor. Any drives above 1TB are either 12mm or 15mm. Although you will be unable to fit 2 drives into the same unit, even if one of then is 1TB or smaller, you should be able to fit a single 2TB drive in the unit alone.

This requires 12V. It doesn't work in a laptop or an unmodified Mac mini.

newegg has wrong info on the description I missed it last night its says the drive is 9.5 and 15mm tall .

as for taking apart the tall 2tb 2.5 case and getting it to fit in a mini I have not seen it done.

It may be possible but it is not worth it in my opinion.

I know the 1tb samsungs are a very tight squeeze length wise they are a fraction longer and hard too get in.

I have only done the samsungs I have read the wd are a bit long and a tight fit.

If capacity is most important I would put in 2 x 750 western digital scorpio blacks. I had them in my mac mini server nice drives. Very fast.
