Over a minute to boot... Really?

Okay so I know this isn't really a big deal, however, I was at a friends who was demonstrating to me his new PC, which I might add cost him well under £1,000. He has Windows 7 and one thing he mentioned and showed was that it booted up in around 30 seconds, maybe less. I answered rather confidently, that my new £1,300 iMac did the same and was just as quick.

So when I got home, I booted mine up, and to my shock it took 01:05.8 from start to complete. That's one minute and five seconds, double his half the price Windows PC. Is that right?

Maybe so but you can leave yours switched on 24/7 restarting for updates and know it'll just work. You can also live happy that if something freezes you can force quit it and relaunch without having to reboot. Oh not forgetting in a few weeks time after he has looked at some porn his computer will be full of ad and spyware. Your mac won't ;)
 
When did you start measuring and when did you end it? Windows loads itself quite fast till login screen but loading desktop and all other small things like antivirus takes forever! It should be measured when it has loaded everything and can fully be used like this:

1. Make sure no password required on boot and that it will automatically go to your account (no clicking). Also check that you have no apps launching when logging in
2. Reboot
3. Shut it down and make sure there are no updates etc which would slow down
4. Press the power button and start counting
5. When you have managed to the desktop, open web browser and wait till (set google as homepage) homepage opens.
6. When Google has opened, stop measuring time.

That's how I would do it but I don't care about boot times as I always sleep my iMac.

Also, make sure you friend doesn't have hard drives in RAID 0 or SSDs

Follow this advice, and the problem should be resolved. I had the same problem. Average boot time was right around 1 min. Went to system preferences, then start-up disk, and clicked on mac osx hd and the new average boot time is right around 30 seconds. Right now your iMac is having to search for the right drive to boot from when you start it up, and that severely hampers speed. Good luck.
 
Guess not! iMac can boot in under 30 seconds no problem, but that's irrelevant to the point.

I too don't get what the big deal over boot time is. Whenever I see a speed comparison video of certain tech on youtube, first thing they do is always compare boot times. First thing someone does when they talk about how fast the i7 iMac is, they time its boot time.

I personally wouldn't care if my i7 booted in 30 seconds or 60 seconds-- especially considering I only restart it- reboot it once every month or so.

+1 I agree with this post,

on my windows 7 box which btw has VERY high performance parts inside of it', on paper it's faster the my i7 iMac, with more ram etc etc.

and on my Windows 7 Box i have to wait Well over a minute after logging in just to use Internet explorer

if i launch internet explorer TO early before everything is done loading i get an error message, and i have to close it.
 
Clock your friend's PC boot time again in a couple of months after it's not so new anymore.

I'm betting your results will be different.

lol... you need to stop peddling this old tired rubbish. Its not true, much like Apple's 'just works' mantra. ;)

Well there is a lot of misinformation in this thread really.

Both OSX and Windows can bog down at boot, just look at what is in your startup menu. I've had OSX be unresponsive for awhile after boot when a bunch of stuff was listed at startup. Same with Windows. However it's really easy to keep it clean.

With Windows 7 I've had nothing but terrific speed and efficiency, and it never degrades or slows down over time. This isn't Windows 95 people, and there is no magic involved in either OS. It's very simple to keep either of them clean, no viruses, no malware etc.

Windows 7 is fast and runs on high quality, low cost hardware. That's simply a fact of life, it has nothing to do with MS vs. Apple, and trying to make it so is very juvenile.

No problem with anyone loving their macs, just lets try and keep the facts straight.

Just because Apple's puerile advertising says something is true doesn't make it so.

my dual core celeron, 2GB RAM rips Hbrakes faster than my old 20" Alu imac (2.66ghz)

and it boots to browser launch in under 30 seconds.

The problem with all computers is the organic mush behind the keyboard... and that is platform/OS irrelevant!

I agree. I built my grandparents a PC for 300€ and it runs Windows 7 amazingly fast. Vista was/is slow (maybe because cheap laptops came around its launch) and needs faster hardware but as people have said for long time, 7 is as light as XP but has Vista's features.

What is the best way to keep my iMac clean. Should I be clearning temp data or anything like that? Are there any tips you can give me to keep it in the best state possible?

tested mine against vista
27 inch i5
35 secs to load and launch safri

vista hp laptop duo core 4 gb ram
3mins 45 secs to IE

windows 7 on imac i5 windows only install over 2 mins to boot up and launch IE

Don't believe the adverts windows doesn't compare to a mac for performance you can only compare windows to windows

i'm converted to apple and only reason i'm running windows 7 is so i can play games only
 
I don't think it's about being impatient. I am very patient, but I love it starting up quick just because it makes your Mac seem more awesome :cool:

Yeah umm it's not that rubbish.

Yesterday lunchtime i had to restart my works lappy (toshiba, core 2 duo 1.8) with windows vista on...

time from clicking restart, to it actually being ready to use again...

A STAGGERING 9 MINUTES......

My mac mini 1.6 core solo at home takes less than 90 seconds to do a full restart.
 
More about helping people speed up PCs. Guys who are doing windows test on vista, try turning off indexing. Windows 7 is well worth the upgrade if people are still using PCs a fair bit.

Macbook Pro 2.26Ghz c2d with SSD booted up in 13 secs

For what it is worth, this forum supports selective filtering of posts by username. I recommend it.

Now if only people would stop quoting them, all would be well.

A. dont turn the mac off, it it can wake from sleep instantly and it doesnt hurt to be put in sleep mode

B. See what your friends boot time is in 3 months when hes installed some 3rd party software
