I looked all over the system preferences pane, and although I can change the setting for the screen itself, I cannot over-ride the light sensor controlling when I can use the backlit keyboard.

There are some cases where I want the backlighting on, but when I press the button to turn it on it won't let me because the sensor is picking up too much ambient lighting.

Can it be done?

F8.F9.F10 on the 17" MBP SR control the light. You can manually turn them on and adjust the brightness. I also know that under the "keyboard and mouse" section in the control panel will have an option where you can select to automatically control the light.
