So now that it has been out for a few months now, what are peoples opinions on Lollipop vs the UI of Kit Kat?

Right. It's excessive in numerous ways. The animations are intentionally slow as if to say "look at me", which is a turn off for me.
iOS 7 was the same way and I think they threw a lot of that out in iOS 8.
I really like it aesthetically.
I hate that Google didn't take the opportunity to add the most basic of features into stock Android such as the ability to choose different lock screen and home-screen wallpapers. A material design simple file browser is overdue and still an oversight. The very simple addition of 'close all' option in multitasking is still madness.
These are simple things that would not in any way shape or form detract from stock android experience and yet Google still choose to not add things like this which would only enhance end user experience is just frustrating to say the least.
Another quirk to material design is the fact that some apps don't gel / fit the design language such as Calendar which still doesn't colorise the notification bar like the majority of other material stock apps.
Other than that I appreciate its speed and fluidly, the fact that the system only seems to take up 250mb of system memory and even with 9 apps open and running in the background I still have 1.1gb free on my Moto X is amazing. Especially coming from the Galaxy S5 where your at 1.2-1.4gb used without anything else open.

One thing that really bothers me is the way you bring up settings now (2 fingers from top)

Not as robust, stable or mature as 4.4.4. There's still some things that need to be fixed and overall there's a few things that I just don't like.
For me, LL makes android the best OS from an aesthetic and functional POV. I personally enjoy the attention to detail and integration of services such a GV VVM into the dialer alongside search. The apps that have taken advantage of the design language really stand apart. Just look at Falcon Pro 3.

I can't speak on any smartphones. But on my Nexus 7 2013, Lollipop is faster and smoother. The User Profiles is a great plus. Still not to fond of the way notification pull down is setup. On recent apps, there is still no clear/close all. Battery life seems exactly the same even though Lollipop's footprint is smaller than KitKat.

I like it aesthetically, and it feels more responsive. But for notifications and system settings, I don't like that it requires me to make that extra swipe or tap. It used to be so straightforward. I have it on both Nexus 5 and 7, btw.
Honest opinion - blinding white everywhere, they took away basic features like silent mode and ticker notifications, battery life isn't improved at all after all the hype.
I'm sure its a great OS, Material design is beautiful, but its an unfinished OS with too many bugs and its not even well designed with the whites for an AMOLED screen which is in the Nexus 6.

Yep. Same with iOS 7/8. There is one thing I want from both iOS9 and Android 5.x.... Dark theme or night mode! For the love god please!
I have not tried it but Android Lollipop looks so amazing/polished and better looking than Kitkat and new features of Android Lollipop

I like it much better than kitkat, although some things need getting used to, like the new way to mute, and the quick settings menu. Android is actually starting to look polished. Battery seems about the same, and I'm glad they finally got rid of that black crap in for example settings. Always looked dated and cheap to me.
The only thing I don't really dig is the tinted status bar. For example, I like the old browser better than chrome, because of the pie controls, but the status bar turns bright green, which kind of keeps me from using it. I wish there were an option to just keep it black or something, systemwide.

I like the new look of Lollipop. The animations, while not necessary, definitely add to the polished feel. The white background of the app drawer is actually a nice refreshing change.
My Nexus 7's battery life improved dramatically after installing lollipop (I sideloaded it).
The only big drawback I'm noticing is one aspect of the notifications.
I think it's a step backwards for Google to implement only one notification shade for tablets. In Kitkat, you would swipe down on the left side for your notifications and on the right for your settings.

It's referred to as "Lollipoop" for a reason.

Yeah, Lollipop is the Android equivalent to iOS 7, IMO--brand new design that can be a bit off-putting (I personally really like both, including the use of white) but a bit rough around the edges. I like the direction Google went with the design, just needs some tweaking and time to mature.
Shouldn't have to. It's too slow by default.
I feel like Lollipop is like what OS X 10.3 or 10.4 was. OS X had aqua, which was a little excessive and Apple eventually scaled it back. I expect the same from Android.
I like it personally, performance is better than KitKat. I do shorten the animations though, and disable the transition animation,but did the same on KitKat too

I don't like it all that much other than in the new Google Maps. Otherwise, usability has taken a hit in places where it didn't need to be touched, e.g. volume management is incredibly irritating now compared to Kit Kat. I'm not that big a fan of the design either, I personally think that Apple did the whole flat aesthetic far, far better than Google. Lollipop looks like a confused mishmash of elements of iOS 6 and 7/8.
Um, maybe everyone who can't use their Nexus 7 anymore since 5.0 rendered it useless? Or the other actual Android fans that admit it's a flop:

Those folks can always go back to 4.4.4 if 5.0 is that bad. Going back isn't possible on iOS...
