What is the overall performance of Catalina?

I'm thinking of giving my macbook a format, give it a fresh start. and go straight to this os.

I just installed it on my iMac 2017 4k did the second apfs volume thing where they can share space so my iMac is running major, Catalina, and windows. So far for the hour or so iv been in Catalina its running just as good as major.

It's just barely into public beta 1 and with some of the not happy posts right here on MR, there is NO way I would install it on a primary use machine. YMMV

I had problems with wifi, battery and streaming Hulu and Netflix.

What machine do you have?

It runs absolutely perfectly(apart from the long boot sequence) on my 2017 MBP nTB. Haven't see a beachball since the instalment last week...

a 12 core cMP 5,1 with a metal GPU and an NVMe SSD, 32GB of ram.
It seemed to get better after I boot into a couple times, however mojave is still way faster.
This is to be expected on a beta OS.

For me the Preview keep getting beach balls and goes "Not Responding", I have to force quit every time!

Oh, and the Update screen in kaput. I am on Catalina beta, and Sierra update shows pending lol, can't get rid of it either
Keeps asking me to login my Apple account whenever I try to update any program although I login every time.

This is the worst BETA MacOS I've encountered

This one has more changes than any of the recent versions, so that's probably why its a little more unstable.
Realistically we haven't had any MAJOR changes since Leopard, until now. Mission control probably counts as one, whatever version added that. Mountain Lion I think? Yosemite just made the UI ugly and removed a lot features, and so on with the later versions. At least dark mode makes it look a little better. Mac OS, sorry "macOS" is still very dumbed down though. Lots of things removed, useless "features" added that I couldn't even name because I don't use any of them. If I could just use Snow Leopard with a modern browser and support for my GPU I would.

But this time Finder got a bit of an overhaul with iTunes being integrated into it for iPods and such; which I don't know how much I'll like that. 32bit support removed; also stupid as it will not improve anything whatsoever (inb4 "iT mAkEs the oS LiGhTeR aNd iTs tHe fUtUrE"). Pretty Sure mojave and all subsequent versions will run the same with or without the 32bit layer. Why don't I use Windows instead? Because MS is killing Win 7 and 10 is an even bigger disaster than macOS is.
Not sure how I managed to de-rail this thread, I guess thats what happens when I get on macrumors at 4am during the last 2 hours of my shift..Sorry guys lol

On a late 2018 (bought in June2019) 15" TB MBP, i7 2.6 /6cores, 16GB, 512, Radeon 560x.

So far above average performance. A couple of spins. 32 apps obviously gone but I only had 1. Excel 2019 2 crashes due to memory page faults (bug report sent). Office 2019 works fine otherwise. No issues with default apps like music or tv. Other apps work as expected. Messages is not as refined as iOS 13, not sure when they plan to implement some of the social fun stuff into iMessage that I thought they were going to.

Time Machine seems to be flaky insofar as it does not automatically begin the hourly backups (bug report sent).

Startups are much longer than the 10.14.5 sequence and I get consistent hangup and tailspin on shutdown (bug report sent).

My biggest disappointment is the fan noise and heat that was no existent in my brand new MBP with 10.14.5 and is almost constant in 10.15.0.19A487m (bug report sent).

Every Mac is different!!

In general about the same as Mojave apart from some buggy stuff thats slower. Start up and shut down time currently take waaay longer than Mojave though.

Slow at certain tasks , Finder is messy, start and shut down takes forever and the implementation of iCloud Drive with the desktop not the best sofar ,Pages is not loading and is very slow , probably because of the fact my shared documents are in iCloud but other than that is very good

For an early beta, I think overall performance. Mines a 15” MVP with 32gigs ram. It’s my work machine mostly running illustrator and photoshop. No noticeable slow down in performance

I wish people would stop spreading information like that. This is absolutely not the reason. This is a 12 core 24 thread machine. Could run 30 VMs of Catalina and still be fast.

The reason is because it is a beta OS. Mojave was slower in it's early stages too. Even 10.14.0 - 10.14.3 are noticeably slower than 10.14.5 is on the same machine.

Every application I run, runs fast as you say.
It is the system apps that I found to be slow for me; such as Finder. I suspect most of it has to do with the iTunes separation.

I read on a forum (reddit perhaps) that Catalina is the next Kodiak (OS X). I chuckled at the comparison since I remember the painful beta of OS X. This is no Kodiak. Its more of a Snow Leopard. Significant changes to architecture (IA-32/64 --> IA-64 only). The lay person and target Mac user is not using a lot of 32 bit applications on their 2 year old MBP, iMac, or MB. My bet is unless it is a super rare to find software, most are running 64 bit clean applications. (I lost support for my Amateur Radio Application, Echolink). Not having some of the new features will make most people switch to a replacement application if made. Or do like do and keep around some older machines just for fun.

So with the latest build (19A501i) DB3-PB2, I have found it to be more quiet and surprisingly stable. The fan noise is mostly non-existent unless really stressing the machine. The runway processes I found hither and yon (random processes) are not there. My machine is mostly trouble free except a /.Trash folder issue under my user profile.

Excel has not crashed any more. I am getting some random crashes in Safari when selecting text on some websites to copy and paste. It happens when selecting with a mouse. Not when ctrl+c after selection. Bug report sent. I have sent 20'ish reports to Apple regarding behavior that I believe to be not appropriate.

Overall I've been satisfied with this build but...it is not yet ready for primetime. The next build IMHO would qualify to be the Release Candidate. I base this on a history of Apple releasing mostly trouble free OS's in ver x.x.0.

Anyone here beta test System 7.5? It was a major "fix" for System 7.1.x. It brought to the mainstream, PPC support. It was the Snow Leopard to that System 7.1. My point is I believe 10.15.2 or .3 will shake out the real sticky issues. The masses have 0-3 year old Macs. Apple will release it and fix along the way.
10.15 is going to be painful for people who rely on 32 bit software.
