Overclocking the 8800 in XP SP3

Hello,

I am running XP SP3 and am looking to overclock it. I have read several places that the 8800gs can hit clock speeds of 600/800. Apple has clocked this thing at less than half of that.

I have used rivatuner and ATI tool trying to get it to overclock with the latest drivers from laptopvideo2go. If you find a driver that is overclockable, please post the version number here.

Lets see what this thing can do!

I never did that but remember you have a GPU running in a closed enclosure without the option to change cooling system.

On my PC i used to overclock my 7900GT about 30% but I changed the cooler to Zalman and never had a issue.
If you clock it way higher you can simply melt it and that would suck as it would be a pain to get it fixed.
 
I have overclocked every iMac owned in recent memory. The fans can be increased to a maximum level and I have yet to fry anything. ;)

I understand it may be an issue for some, but it is a must for hardcore gamers.

Hardcore gamers wouldn't be using an iMac to begin with.

I agree with D4F on this one. Apple clocks their GPUs at a certain level for good reason. There are very few enclosures as tight as that of the aluminum iMacs. Even driving the fans at higher than default speeds you're running a great risk.

For one thing, you lower the life of the non-user-replaceable fans themselves. If you happen to damage or destroy the GPU due to heat failure from overclocking good luck getting Apple to fix it under warranty. It's a pretty serious risk to take with a $2200.00 computer, no?

This is why Windows gaming rigs are generally big, ugly, noisy wind tunnels with all sorts of oversized heatsinks and cooling fans in spacious enclosures.
 
Giant is correct, running smcfancontrol makes it fine to overclock. Like him I have had no problems overclocking the ATI cards. And likewise as yet I've not been able to overclock the 8800gs, we'd like some info from people who have done this...

An app called AMD GPU Clock Tool is what I use to OC (i'll get back to you on the name), frequencies that are safe (from my experience without crashes and artifacts) to use are 615/774. I also make sure that smcfancontrol is keeping the Imac cool.

Out of interest the 8800 seems to run cooler to the touch than the 2600 when gaming in bootcamp (without OC either card). Even without OC'n the 2600 I used smcfancontrol when playing intensive games like COD4.

Does anyone know how to o/c the 8800 in Vista Ultimate? Do I just install laptopdrivers2go and then use RivaTuner or ATI-tool?

Somebody said in a thread that you need to hack the nfi file to be able to install drivers that can be o/c for the 8800. Or do I just need laptopdrivers2go, and if so which driver version?

Thanks for any input, much appreciated as my iMac is supposed to return early next week :p
 
arghhhhh I left the windoze/pc camp to get away fro OCing - tell me it ins't true that u peeps are oc-ing you macs (sad bunny)

But good show I suppose to those intrepid adventurers - personally my OC fr a vid card is to stuff it in a pc and get the OC stable, then write the new values to a firmware image and re-flash the card (hence my old PC runs a 8800GTX (rev 1.0) at 2.1Ghz / 633Mhz) :)
