Overclocking the iMac

I'm trying to find information so I can overclock my 600Mhz G3 processor. My iMac is a Summer 2001 slot loading model.

I seem to be running into webpage after webpage - explaining soldering and whatnot for the older sub-400mhz computers - but not mine. Does my model have an I/O switch block (I can just flip switches to clock the processor) or is soldering still required?


I want to try to aim for the max. possible clock of 1Ghz (I will need to mount a good fan onto the processor - logic board's going into an atx case, no doubt about it).

There used to be a site somewhere - that listed all the possible clock settings for all iMac revisions - from the first, all the way up to the one I have (and it even had a resistor table for every one) - as well as the how-to directions for each mod... It's got to be buried somewhere in the internets - but I cannot find it. Can someone point me to links if they happen to stumble upon it?

I've already tried xceler8yourmac and applefritter sites - both of which get me nowhere; and Google is no help (whereas I'm just gettting repeat searches - either to those two sites or a dead one).

Seriously, what do I want to accomplish? Higher clock speeds, that's the only purpose - and more work for myself because I've got bored days

At the end of the day - it probably can be done... worth it? Meh, I might better myself getting a nice 24" iMac; programs certainly don't like my hardware though (universal my ass )

When I'm done with it: It will be very useful as a boat anchor!

You gotta be kidding.
I had a pismo 500 Mhz,the max. possible overclocking would be 600 Mhz stable,20 % would be about max on a ppc.
You think this is an intel core2 duo which can be easily overclocked!
A fan won't help,You just can not go that far.
And then,what would You gain,a few % extra.
Buy Yourself a secondhand or a new mac with a intel proc.
Then You can also have Leopard

True, though this thing's already at a stock speed of 600Mhz. I think though it would be able to reach 1Ghz, it would probably be for a short time, and with water cooling (much harder to customize and probably not worth it). Though I've seen a G4 PowerMac, it *had* to have a watercooler when it was overclocked by only a few Mhz.

I'm saving for a nice 24" iMac, got that covered already

My father overclocked a Mac Clone with a PowerPC processor, 192 MB RAM, 6 GB HD, and the best graphics card that could possibly fit in it, all the way from 210 MHZ to 667 MHZ. It was originally running 7.5, and Mac OS 9 wouldn't install because it wasn't supported. My dad literally spent days coming up with code and hacking the CD to install Mac OS 9 on there, and finally was able to. Once Mac OS X came out, he tried to do the same thing and got it to partly boot up but then close and he finally found out that Mac OS X didn't support non-G3 PowerPC processors so he gave it up and just returned to OS 9, but for some reason OS 9 wasn't as fast as it was before. It became my own main computer from about 2001 to 2002. After about 4 years of being overclocked almost 300%, the thing started smoking as I was playing the game where you are the deer and you hunt the person, and I ran to my dad and the whole room was full of smoke, he immediately unplugged the computer and waited.

After it was done, he basically just threw it out. He was really bummed because of how much time he put into that computer and the fact that it was a workhorse. Man I loved that Mac Clone so much.

Reason of the story: Don't overdue overclocking just because you are bored.
