Overclocking

Hi guys, I got a new 1.42 ghz mac mini and I want to overclock it to 1.58 ghz! I read on a guide that you can desolder some small jumpers, or whatever they're called. Then I heard you can disconnect these without any soldering?? I am terrible at it, so I would like to overclock without any soldering whatsoever. Has anyone does this and is it dangerous to the machine to do it manually? Thanks!

You wouldn't notice any difference anyway! You'd be looking at knocking a couple of minutes off an hour's video encoding, and that's about it.

1.42: 5037.6MFlops
1.58: 5671.7MFlops

Let1kWindowsBloom (Carbon)-
1.42: 15 seconds
1.58: 12 seconds

SpeedX-
1.42: 2.97 seconds
1.58: 2.55 seconds

1.42: Results 35.93, CPU Test 68.47, Memory Test 36.27, Quartz Graphics Test 54.65, OpenGL Graphics Test 71.53, User Interface Test 17.13 and Disk Test 21.91

1.58: Results 37.32, CPU Test 72.70, Memory Test 33.96, Quartz Graphics Test 59.05, OpenGL Graphics Test 75.74, User Interface Test 18.48 and Disk Test 22.02

The change won't blow your mind but it is noticeable. Good luck.

Yeah those are nice results, but you really wouldn't notice a difference, unless you did come serious video encoding. Even then the change would be marginally at best. G4 Mac Minis are just worth overclocking. It would have been nice if Apple hadn't soldered the CPU to the motherboard though.

How to Overclock your G4 Mac mini:
Step 1: Sell G4 Mac mini.
Step 2: Buy Intel Mac mini.

It's a lot faster, and if you make a shrewd buy it'll only take $50-100 extra.
