I have Macbook Pro 2020 M1 model. O notice really strange behaviour... The Mac gets very hot and the fan turns on, causing the battery to drain quickly. I have all apps closed, only Chorme is running. Is Chrome that destructive? It puts more strain on my Mac than Logic Pro or Final Cut. Is this normal? How could I check if everything is OK with the Mac?

I use Edge, Safari, and Chrome at the same time on my M1 MacBook Air, with a bunch of tabs and windows for all 3, on account of being a web developer. While it doesn't have a fan to turn on, it doesn't throttle and CPU temp is seldom higher than 30C according to iStat Menus. It does have 16GB ram/1TB ssd. Are you using Chrome Task Manager by chance? If so, don't -- that really stresses CPU. Aside from that, try using Edge instead of Chrome, they work virtually the same, except Edge has better tracking prevention.

Chrome is a notoriously terrible browser (it can't even figure out how to update stored passwords for weeks after you change them) and is an absolute resource hog but it's not going to kill your machine. Fans running is normal operation for super intensive tasks (which Chrome shouldn't be but again, terrible browser).

If your machine was truly overheating you would lag and it would eventually shut down.

Also side note, if you're using it on a blanket or soft surface, don't, blankets and pillows are great at blocking the fan port.

Thanx. Anyway, I think something is not OK with my Macbook. i have fresh installed Monterey on it and only Chrome open with one tab, no video, after some minutes fans are running like crazy and the mac is really hot, battery start to go really fast from 100% down, like - I didn't have those problems with my previous 2015 macbook... Any idea what can I do to see if the Mac is OK?

OP: I don't have any direct experience with the 13" MBP, but what you are describing doesn't sound right to me. I used to use Chrome on both my MBP14 and Studio and never heard any fan noise. IMHO running Chrome shouldn't tax an M1 machine much at all.

I suspect your interpretation of “Fresh installed” and mine are different. Really sounds like a Chrome extension going wild. Disable/remove all the extensions. If that doesn’t sort it, create a new user account - do NOT sign into Apple ID or Gmail - install Chrome - and see if it happens when using that account.

It was clean install. I erased the disk. Like a week ago.

Also, I left my Mac on for an hour with alll aps closed, battey lost the 18% of capacity. Macbook is 1 year old, battery health is on 97%.

However I turn my point of view, last week or so fans are on like always, never before that happened... Maybe it isn't Chrome?

Interesting. Under the battery icon, for a week, it was written like "Logic is using significant energy" - even when Logic was closed. Now it seems Mac isn't heating anymore (be it true) - and it says "No app is using significant energy".

???

I'd try this:

- make a new user account (System Settings > Users & Groups)
- restart
- log into ONLY that new account. Don't bother tying it to your iCloud, just skip that.
- let it run, experiment a bit with running Chrome or running maybe Safari instead

The point of this is that by running a "vanilla" user account, you can see if it's something in your normal user account that's causing the issue.
