Overlapping files in Finder oddity.

It seems that alot of my files are overlapping each other when I download files, or when I just move files singularly or in a group into a folder. It seems as well, if they don't overlap, then they get spread out very oddly, shifting vertically displaying one icon per line. Has anyone experienced this before? It's getting pretty annoying. I attached a screenshot of one of my folders to get an idea of it.

I get the same thing too, especially when inporting a group of files off a CD or downloaded zip package.

It doesn't bother me overmuch, I simply select View/Clean Up (or Arrange) and it's all sorted out.

I agree tho, it's a slightly annoying flaw. Not sure where it comes from - perhaps a GUI god[ess] could shed some light?

I've had the same symptom since I installed the last Mac OS X update.

I thought I must have done something bad in a past life to deserve this quirk. So perhaps you did something bad in a past life too.

Or perhaps Mac OS X has a bug.

I've seen it as far back as Jaguar (which was the first version of OS X I used).

yay I'm not alone. I noticed this after the last OS X update and its really quite annoying.

I see this periodically when I move a large amount of data from one networked share to a local directory. Since I rarely view things in Icon view, it doesn't really bother me, but a "Clean Up" always fixes it.

This happened back in OS 8.6 and OS 9.

Perhaps, but it didn't happen in OS X until very recently, so some code or a setting got b0rked, apparently from an OS X update, and it would be nice to have it deb0rked.

In the meantime, I'm using a crude workaround: In folders in which I use icons, I've set the folder View Options to "Keep arranged by Name", which is less than ideal.

Well I take solace in the fact I'm not alone, I'd rather have a well known problem, than a bug no one else ever encounters. I just found it odd that it only started happening in the last month or so.

I just used the Character Palette to copy and paste different odd symbols for the folder name. It makes the folders look neat, though it can cause a bit of a pain if you are trying to navigate those folders in Terminal.

I've noticed this happen with stuffit expander on occasion, it likes to make little stacks of files as it expands them.
