Have had an issue with overscan since day one with my Samsung LN40C650 LCD TV.

I connect my TV to my MBP (mid 2009) via an MDP/HDMI cable from Monoprice. Black bars appears on all four sides. I am mirroring the displays (even without mirroring displays I have this issue).

Nothing that I have attempted on both the MBP or TV rids me of these bars. I've done some research online and have found no solutions.

Any ideas? I have a ton of movies ripped to an external, and I'd love to play them via my MBP, but those bars are annoying as hell, especially when the film itself already contains black bars on the top and bottom.

Mirroring the displays will definitely be problematic, because the mirrored display will be shown at the same resolution as the MBP. I realize you said you had the problem when you weren't mirroring the displays, but I wanted to make it clear that mirroring won't get the job done.

So, you should concentrate on non-mirrored. Assuming your TV is 1080p, you should select a resolution of 1920×1080 from the MBP for the TV. Then, you need to make sure your TV is set to the correct mode. TVs these days have lots of choices; you probably want the one with 1 for 1 scaling (every manufacturer has their own terminology).

If you still can't figure it out, I would recommend going to AVS Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/) and doing some research there.

Thanks for the responses. I figured out how to make it work. Made sure I wasn't mirroring the displays. Then I dragged the video file to the second monitor (my HDTV screen). Made the video file full screen, and I was ready to go. :)
