Hi everyone - got an OWC Thunderbolt 4 enclosure for the blaxing speeds and to use as an adobe scratch disk.
I set my adobe scratch to this drive and it causes after effects to crash so hard that "Force quit" does nothing. I have to open my clamshell Macbook M3 Pro and hold down the power button to reset it.
I have my mac powered by a thunderbolt with power delivery monitor from Dell. No issues with this mac until I plugged in this drive, then came back to my computer which was asleep during my lunch break. After that? HARD hang in after effects and a reboot is required.
It seems to be related to sleep - but even when unplugging it/plugging back in, After effects would hang BAD (as that is what was looking for the drive, perhaps?). I use it for nothing other than scratch. No storage.
Running Mac OS 15.5, 1TB internal SSD, 36 GB ram.
I've read a ton of forum and discussion posts about how the OWC firmware causes crashes, how OWC says to turn off sleep on the mac, how people say to use another brand of TB4 cables, or that I should avoid OWC altogether on mac.
I'm willing to take the hit and use it as scratch on my PC if I need to. Is it even worth finding an alternative? Tired of Adobe eating through my free space on my internal drive.
