I just plugged my new HD into my mac w/USB and it worked fine but FW800 seems to be not responding. I tried front and back ports but got nothing. I hope its not the cable because then I gotta spend more money :/ and wait again.

Try
- Shutting down and restarting from cold with the drive plugged in. Or if its got a copy of OSX try booting from it.
- Is it a Mac Pro or G5? Does the drive show mounted in the Disk Utility?
- DOes the Firewire Bus appear in System info panel?
- A FW 400 cable instead. or the other FW800 port if its a Mac Pro.
- If the firewire bus is there but disk doesnt mount try reseting the PMU (SMC in intel macs) sometimes the Firewire just needs a reset.

I had the same problem with an external LaCie FW800 drive. I already had one plugged into the rear FW800 port and it worked fine, but the front port wouldn't recognize the 2nd LaCie until after I had rebooted.

Also check with an other cable. I almost went mental, when I could not connect my FW800 disks. It turned out that my 4.5meter "el cheapo"-cable was broken. :D
