$479 for 4x8=32GB or $859 for 4x16=64GB. The estimates on the upgrade pricing posted a couple days ago was $400 and $1600 Why such a difference in the 64GB option?

Also OWC will buy back the stock 12GB for $75 and 16GB for $100 (also 32GB for $250).

So final costs would be $404/784 OR $379/759 depending on if you bought the 4-core or 6-core.

Apple is probably valuing the 16GB in the 6-core config ($3999) at somewhere around $300-$400, which means Apple's price for 32GB is actually more like $700 (since their $400 BTO option is on top of the price of the 16GB).

While OWC's price for 32GB of $479 is very reasonable (esp. with the buy back)... it's basically a wash - an extra $400 out of pocket either way so I suspect most people will just buy the 32GB upgrade from Apple due to the simplicity of it all.

If that pricing is correct on Apple's 64GB BTO, then you're obviously way better off buying from OWC, or SuperBiiz ($170 per 16GB Stick)

So Apple is using mixed memory in the 4-core? An 8gb chip with a 4gb??? Seriously, why did they do that? Just so they can get everyone to upgrade the memory? Why not 16gb? Is that breaking the bank or something to add 4 more gb? 12mb? Come-on...

Memory is ridiculously expensive right now. I just ordered some for a couple of iMacs, and the price has doubled since a year ago. I read stuff about a fire in a factory, yadda yadda...

I can't believe it's so high.


Also, this entire machine is ridiculously expensive. I've had a few Mac Pros, and was looking forward to getting a new one, but its looking like $4500; which is insane considering how prices have dropped.

I can't imagine they will sell many to the old core people who owned them before, unless they can write it off on their business or something.

Me, I like a powerful machine, with a separate graphics card and a processor you used to be able to upgrade. And I use multiple monitors. The benchmarks I've seen for the low end mac pro don't knock me off my socks....

Yep - Early this year 32 for the iMac was 190 average. Now? Same old game. A marketable item

No. If you look at the tech specs on the Apple site they state it's 3x4GB. All you need to do is add a fourth.

Nobody knows (or is able to reveal) what going from 12GB to 16GB will actually cost until Apple publishes the BTO prices tomorrow. From what I saw OWC only sells 32GB or 64GB upgrade sets, not individual sticks. Maybe you can get a stick of 4GB from a site like Crucial if Apple's pricing doesn't work out to your liking.

ETA: you can get a compatible 4GB stick from Crucial for US$60, assuming it's kosher to mix memory brands at the 4GB stick level. I know that at the 16GB stick level it's a bad thing to do.

if they don't offer the one stick, i imagine there will be a weird little market of people 3rd party upgrading their ram then selling off their existing 4GBs as singles

Yes, just to clarify. The 12GB is 3 4GB sticks and I think if someone wanted to get to just 16GB there will be a lot of people selling off their 3 4GB sticks to go up to 4x8 or 4x16 from OWC or other vendors.
