Bought an OWC SSD for the laptop, fine, nice performance boost....but the sleep/freeze issue is driving me nuts. I don't have a supported copy of Windows to install the firmware update.

So I am thinking to pop it in my MP and get the benefits on that platform.

Will the sleep/freeze issues still be there or are they more related to laptops?

I think the sleep issue affects all Macs, not just laptops. It's something about the RAM being saved to the SSD and then it cannot be read for some reason etc. I'm not that familiar with the details. You can send the SSD back to OWC and they will update it if you don't have access to Windows.

I have the OCZ Vertex 2 3.5" 240GB, and sleep works fine. My SSD came with 1.28 from the factory (and it worked fine), and I updated it to 1.29, still working fine.

Which issue, the sleep one or the hibernating one? Different things. Based on you suggesting you're going to toss it in your MP to fix it, I'll assume you're talking about hibernate.

And while it is theoretically an issue on all Macs, most Mac Pros have hibernate disabled by default. In the terminal, type:

pmset -g

You should see, among other things 'hibernatemode 0' - which means you shouldn't have any problems. The Mac Performance Guide has instructions as to how to turn it off it it's not already:

While I won't say you shouldn't use the SSD in your Mac Pro (I'm loving mine), you could probably get in touch with OWC, and see if you could send it in and have them reflash it for you. They've out-and-out said they're willing to do that.

I have the same problem with the OWC SSD drive in my2009 MacBook Pro. Even After I had it returned from OWC for same issue.

I finally just put it in my 2009 Mac Pro with no issues at all. OWC just released today a firmware update for these issues. You can return it to OWC and they will update the firmware for you if you don't have windows.

My 2006 MacBook Pro has hibernatemode 3, for what it's worth.

But the pmset(1) manual page is hysterical!

Code:
We do not recommend modifying hibernation settings. Any changes you make are not supported. If you choose to do
so anyway, we recommend using one of these three settings. For your sake and mine, please don't use anything
     other [than] 0, 3, or 25.

What a chatty Cathy! I've never seen a man page where the person writes it other than in "man page style" - no personal references. Who writes a man page with "We" or "your sake and mine"?!? :D

And if she/he/they don't want you to use any other values, why even have them? (Yes I know it's a bitmask.)

Nice, I put a 120GB in my MacPro last week, how do I know if it is acting up or not then? It seems fine on sleep / wake sooooo....

And I think the send your boot drive in for a firmware flash is BS. They should offer to send you an updated drive that you can clone to and swap out, why have your machine be down due to their issue?

Anyway, what should I be on the lookout for with this drive?
